From the President
I am encouraged when I ride and meet new and old friends on the trails. For years I rode and rarely saw another soul. Now I run into fellow trails enthusiasts sometimes once or twice a week. Not exactly crowded, but it is nice to know if you come off someone might eventually find you! And it is fun to recognize our friends and neighbors, have a chat and pass the time. I think it may have been like this before cars were invented and we all got so busy.
This spring, we tapped into our neighborly spirit and held several Trail Workdays. We built and relocated trails, helped a landowner clean up major trails for reopening and generally did ourselves proud. It was great. Too many people to thank, but you know who you are and if you were like me, the experience was thanks enough. But THANKS anyway!
FETA will again sponsor a number of events and activities this summer. We hope you will come to the Welcome Party on June 12th. It's a time to meet new trail buddies, look at the maps, and enjoy the potluck feast. On Wednesday, July 23, we will host the 4th Annual Safety Fair with our sister organizations, Collinsville Equestrian Trails Association and the Foothills Riding Club. We have an incredible program planned with information you cannot live without. Finally, our annual meeting, BBQ, and Landowner Thank You Party is scheduled for October 11, close to the full moon. We have more trail workdays planned with some surprises for the fall.
So, mark your calendars. Come greet each other and make some new friends. Sign up for our FETA Friends Yahoo Group to stay in touch. This is a special place and a wonderful opportunity to live your dreams. Please continue to share your enthusiasm and your passion.
Ride friendly, ride safely.

Thanks from Membership
You have been so amazing this year! Many have already renewed. Please remember to take your time filling out the renewal form. It's easy to forget to sign both forms or not enclose your check or coggins. Please refer to the check list on the front page before mailing.
For those of you who have not yet renewed, you have until July 1st to renew without penalty. Take your time; please fill out the form completely.
Thank you for the donations toward our on going trail projects. Donations have been generous and numerous. They are very much appreciated.
The guest passes are the same as last year. This was done intentionally to save on printing and allow those with passes left from last year to be able to use them.
A special thanks to those volunteers who helped get our membership renewals in the mail. Thank you for your time and talent Bill Beardslee, Ned Frybarger, Sandy Jobe, Rhonda King, Lisa Spriggs for sending your stand-in Kris Johnson, Sandy Taylor, Carol Ten Broek, and Bobby Wetzel. You lightened our load!

TRAIL NOTICE
Little Mountain Trails Re-Opened to FETA. Hat Creek Cattle and Timber LLC has entered into an agreement with FETA. FETA has been given exclusive use of the equestrian trails on Little Mountain and Williams Mountain. These trails adjoin Hughes Creek Preserve, their equestrian property. Located on approximately 500 acres, these trails have been off the system for several years. Following major renovation and repair work by FETA, they are again open to FETA Members for riding and driving. They are subject to all FETA rules, including trail closings, helmets, loose dogs, no smoking, etc.
FETA will be working to restrict use of the trails by incompatible users (ATV's , motorbikes, mountain bikes and hunters). Many people have been using these trails for years. It will take time to educate them about the restrictions. Please exercise great care when using these trails.
Many thanks, as always, to Mike Stone and Bill Ennis (who serves on the FETA Board) for generously sharing their land to preserve our recreational enjoyment. Please ride safely and be a good guest.
Wildlife Encounters
Trail riding in Western North Carolina exposes us to a variety of plants and animals. Deer and turkey are common. Occasionally we may hear of a bear sighting. Personally, I have found bears to be shy and elusive. My daughter found bear tracks in and near our pond last summer. We made casts of the prints. "Our" bear remains anonymous, but I don't question his existence. Because there are bears in the woods, along with other wildlife that may spook our horses, one of the safest measures we can take is to be prepared. Check out the article at myhorse.com entitled Wildlife Encounters. I've included the link below. The article lists the wildlife we may come across while riding, how to prepare for those chance meetings, and what we should and should not do.
