Geographies of the Middle East
with Dr. David Greenland
Saturday, August 25, 2012 9 a.m. - 12 noon Registration & hospitality 8:30 a.m.
St. Bede's Episcopal Church 2601 Henderson Mill Rd., Atlanta 30345
How does what happens in the Middle East affect what happens in your life -- past, present, and future?
The Institute for Ministry & Theological Education presents "Geographies of the Middle East", taught by Dr. David Greenland, an Episcopalian and a retired Professor of Geography.
According to Greenland, who prefers to use the plural 'geographies' when discussing the Middle East...
Starting with the biophysical stage on which the human geography takes place, Dr. Greenland will cover some of the older civilizations, spending more time on the empires after the time of Christ. He will examine geographical aspects of the three great monotheistic religions that have arisen in the Middle East and consider the ways in which the current Middle Eastern nations came into being -- mostly after the First World War. He will conclude with discussion on what he considers to be "some important issues for the future of the Middle East."
Greenland grew up in southern England and has bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Birmingham, England and a doctorate from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He has taught and performed research in several U.S. universities, including the University of Georgia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Greenland is a member of Church of the Atonement in Atlanta whose members have had the benefit of his course earlier this year.
Registration is $35 and includes morning hospitality and materials.
Registration fee includes morning hospitality and materials. Register by going to imte.episcopalatlanta.org or call 404-601-5353; 800-537-6743 x 121.

Fighting Malaria in Africa
Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta Announces
An Invitation to Honor Bishop Alexander on Cell Phone Sunday
The Diocese of Atlanta Nets for Life team invites you and your parish to honor Bishop Alexander with a gift of nets on Cell Phone Sunday--September 30th.
An Evensong at the Cathedral of St. Philip is scheduled for that date at 4 p.m. to celebrate the ministry of J. Neil Alexander as bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta. Many in our diocese are able to attend that event, many others are not. Regardless, all in our diocese can join together to honor him through participation in Cell Phone Sunday.
Since Bishop Alexander has led our diocese in supporting global mission, Episcopal Relief & Development and Nets for Life, a gift of nets seems an appropriate way to thank him for his service to us. A presentation of our gift of nets to Bishop Alexander is planned for the reception after Evensong.
You can participate by texting on your cell phone that day, no matter where you are!
