Hello again,
|
"I could go crazy on a night like tonight Summer is beginning to give up her fight..."
This line in the song called Mystery by the Indigo Girls rumbles around in my head this time of year. And so it is that Summer is indeed losing ground as we find ourselves in the cool of September. Ready or not, our Fall schedules and routines are here.
Here again are some updates and some things I thought might be helpful or inspiring to you. This issue seemed to come together around the theme of possibility. It even fits with the verse above, as the song continues:
"Maybe that's all
that we need Is to meet in the middle of impossibility
Standing at opposite poles Equal partners in a mystery"
I hope you had a good Summer and that you enjoy this new season with whatever it brings you.

My Appearance on Let's Talk Live
|
I had the chance to appear on this local ABC affiliate talk show in August to talk about what couples need to know before getting married. This was new for me and I didn't know what to expect doing a live broadcast. I had a blast! The co-hosts, Doug and Natasha, were enthusiastic and easy to talk to, and the other guests on the show were accomplished professionals with interesting things to say.
Thank you to quite a few of you who sent along encouraging words or let me know what you liked about the piece. It meant a lot to know your thoughts and energy were with me as I spoke about this important topic to such a broad audience.

On again! My next live T.V. appearance Wednesday August 16, 12pm
|
I've been asked to appear again on Let's Talk Live to discuss my article Ten Things You Can Do Now To Improve Your Relationship. I'm thrilled that this article has become so popular on my website and in other places on the web and can't wait to see how the discussion on the show turns out. I'll be on the show, live, at Noon this Wednesday. I don't know where in the course of the program I'll appear. It is local channel 8 in Washington, DC, and I believe it re-runs at 3pm EST. If you don't get WJLA NewsChannel 8, you can watch the show live here: http://www.letstalklive.tv/. (TECHNICAL NOTE: If your browser doesn't automatically let you play the video on this page, pay attention to any messages you get at the top of your screen that may be prompting you to install a media player like Flash. Some of you may need to right click on that message and enable a quick download to play the video).

Michael Jackson and 15 Proven Tips for Insomnia
|
I'll admit that for a couple of weeks my interest was high in the story about the death of Michael Jackson. It wasn't just that we got to hear MJ played on the organ at the Nationals game we attended that day or the chance to watch the "retrospective" marathon videos that brought the 80's back to our living room. What has captured my attention is the angle of this story that involves an apparently desperate case of complex insomnia. Below is an article I recommend that gives standard tips for insomnia if you are one of the millions who experience it. When these don't work (and for many people they don't), there is something else to consider. When you can't sleep there is usually a lot of "chatter" inside. Most help for sleep (especially pharmacological) focuses on managing and eliminating this chatter. There is a place for these management-oriented approaches. However, these treat the symptoms without understanding the cause. Often we think we know the cause and feel powerless to do anything about it. Or worse, as may have been the case with Michael, we try to overpower our feeling powerless with any number of things that will numb or distract us. There is always an alternative to feeling powerless about your thoughts or feelings without using extreme measures. With time and guidance, it is possible to learn how to relate to your insomnia so that it doesn't have to be heavily managed or medicated and I would be glad to consult with you about what that would look like. Here is the article I recommend for "standard" reading on this issue with "15 proven tips" for insomnia: http://www.selfhelpmagazine.com/article/insomnia

Cool Photo of the Month: Imagining the Impossible
|
So much of the energy for growth and healing comes from imagination. Not wild imagination. Just a tiny amount is often all that is needed. The act of envisioning something other than what is directly in front of you uses the higher parts of your brain like the neocortex. Take a minute and exercise your imagination. Think of something you can't imagine being any different and allow yourself to picture a new possiblility. Work backward to discover what it takes to create the conditions for such an outcome. This photo might help you get started. If you've stood next to Niagara Falls before you would be hard-pressed to believe this were possible. Enjoy!
