Water Damage Remediation & Future Prevention

By the time this homeowner returned to her weekend home in Newport, it had been several weeks since the severe spring floods. She quickly discovered water and heavy mold in her son's bedroom in the finished basement. The mold was all over the lower half of the walls and the furniture.

We wrapped all the furniture in plastic before removing it through the house to avoid spreading the prevalent mold spores. The bedding had to be taken to the dump because it could not be cleaned. The walls, floors, and ceilings were then Hepa vacuumed. All surfaces were cleaned and a negative air machine was set-up and vented out the window.

Once everything was dry, an anti-microbial agent was applied to all surfaces. We measured her basement and installed a properly sized dehumidifier to avoid any future moisture problems.

Fire Damage Restoration

A tenant left a candle burning in Mrs. Kessler's apartment, which caused a fire and resultant water and smoke damage to her entire home.

Initially, she was understandably confused and didn't know what to do. We guided her through the restoration process beginning with clearing out a large pile of burnt debris in the driveway, around the house, and inside the rooms in which the fire had occurred.

Then we dried out the entire house and cleaned up the smoke damage. Some of the walls had to have the plaster and insulation removed to get at the smoke damage behind the insulation. We applied a coat of stain sealer to the wood so that new insulation and plaster could be installed.

We cleaned and deodorized all the smoke damaged contents and worked cooperatively with the building contractor on the necessary repairs.

a healthier home.

Q&A

Should I spray something to get rid of the musty smell in my basement?

Spraying may provide temporary relief, but you really need to lower the humidity level by installing a good quality dehumidifier.

Why can't I just open the basement doors and windows to get rid of the smell?

Doing so may bring in damper or warmer air that would cause more condensation to form. Keep the basement doors and windows closed while running a dehumidifier.

What else can I do to dissipate the odor?

Remove all organic materials such as cardboard boxes, paper, clothing, and piles of wood, which are food sources for mold.

Moisture + organic food sources = mold, mildew, smells, and allergens.
