Scent Marketing Goes Mainstream |
The genie is out of the bottle!
|
Up until this year, scent marketing has been a strategy used surreptitiously by casinos, some retail stores and hotel chains. Now, thanks in large part to the efforts of the Scent Marketing Institute, companies worldwide are coming to a whole new appreciation and utilization of this powerful sense.
For example, the organizers of the
Summer Olympic Games in London came out with their "scent of victory," the first such official scent for a major global event.
Conservative industries like the medical field, are beginning to embrace the idea of using scent for marketing and to reduce anxiety. In September, I will be speaking about scent marketing to the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), an industry group for over-the-counter remedies, vitamins and supplements.
Certain geographic regions such as Asia are showing a particularly strong demand for scent solutions, and major retail chains are implementing scent programs in their stores to enhance their customers' experience and boost sales.
We've also seen a lot of new companies in the industry looking to learn the ropes and make connections. If you are one of these new companies, the best thing you can do to jump start your business is to
join the Scent Marketing Institute and to
exhibit and/or attend ScentWorld.
Mobile Scenting the New Trend?
Samsung has recently patented a new mobile smart phone that has the ability to dispense fragrance. The scent will recharge when the user charges the phone. Olfactory researcher, Dr. Jenny Tillotson has also recently released information on a scent phone.
With its ability to affect moods and level of alertness, scent could be a useful feature of your next mobile phone. What do you think? Would you buy a phone that has a built in scent diffuser?
