Blatent Marketing for the Museum

Open Till January 30th, 2010!!
This holiday season, come see the Strawberry Hill Museum in downtown Kansas City, Kansas.  It's a great way to spend a couple weekend hours with family and friends from out of town. There's over 30 beautiful rooms in this old Victorian house, each uniquely decorated.
Greetings!
I think I've used this picture before, but I love it anyway. How many of you feel this way after the holiday feasting? I know I do. Thank goodness I'm tall and it doesn't show! Just like on this Giraffe! LOL!

Gone in 6 to 12 Seconds! Not 60 Seconds! Not Cars!

Did you know that when people use Google, Yahoo or Bing to search for a product or service, they spend on average just 6 to 12 seconds trying to determine if that company can provide the product or service needed.

If they don't "initially" get the info they are looking for in 6 to 12 seconds, they hit the back button and go to the next Website in the list. It's a drag when people do that! It's kind of like how radio station owners must feel when people switch stations when the commercials come on.

We as business owners would love to think all our Website content is important and relevant, but you may want to first think like a searching consumer of your products or services and this darn 6 to 12 second average. We may not like that consumers do this, but it's a fact, and we won't change their searching habits just because we want them to embrace our "Brand" message because it's what our company "is"!

Take this thought just a bit deeper. In this 6 to 12 seconds, does your site say what your most profitable product or service is? Or, is your most profitable product or service information buried somewhere in your site?

Based on the following intro lines from some Websites I went to, can you discern what these companies do?

  • Your leading client centered firm!
  • Our services can reduce your costs, improve your focus, and help you gain access to additional resources.
  • Delivering results to the Health Care Industry
  • Welcome to Advanced Healthcare Solutions
  • Practical Insights! Remarkable Outcomes!
There is much about a Website that can helps people figure out what you do. Make sure you also put easily scannable text, near the top left of your home page that stands out and says exactly what you do!
Social Online Media "Experts"
Folks, this is not a post bashing online social media experts. What it is are some things to think about when someone comes to you selling online social media services........

expertsThere's a growing flock of here's a growing flock of people out there calling themselves social media "experts". What's interesting is that none of these "Experts" have been at it for more than a year or two, and most of them are "personal" usage experts.

The ebb and flow of online applications has changed at least (Insert number here) times over the last two years. Who has had time to become an expert?

I joke about the (insert number here) because the number of online applications that has come and gone really numbers in the hundreds.

But back to the "Expert" concept. How about we ask the "Experts" to please narrow their credentials down to just "experts" in business usage of online social media.

Truly anyone can become an expert in how to sit down at computer and use a social online application. But have they had enough time to become an expert in making online tools successful for other businesses?

When someone comes to you claiming to be an "expert" in online social media, and they want to sell you some type of service, ask them for specific proof of how their expertise has made a business (besides their own) wildly successful.

Ask them for the financial examples of businesses, just like yours, that they've made a difference in that company's bottom line.

I want to talk with people who do more than just use scare tactics to try and sell online social media service. "You've just got to start using Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, because all of your customers are using them. You don't want to get left out. Everyone is using them. Hurry, hurry, hurry, otherwise you'll go out of business because your competitors have it all figured out."

Hah!!!

Oh well, I guess scare tactics do work because there's a ton of "Experts" out there selling and using the above lines.

Please evaluate carefully "YOUR CUSTOMER's" use of online social media, before plunging into the use of an online social media "Experts" services.
