Greetings!
As always, this newsletter is my honest attempt to provide you with information that may be of value to you and your business. It's short, to the point and hopefully somewhat insightful. Please let me know if there are any topics I've neglected, or that you feel could help others related to using a Web site to compete on the Internet. I'll gladly research that topic and provide something of value to everyone in next month's newsletter.

Come on Google, Give us a Break!!!!
It gets a bit old talking about Google, but I had to relay an interesting statistic I read about a week ago. This stat comes directly from the folks at Google. They were asked during a recent national online conference call if there were any significant changes to their search algorithms this year.

Their answer......Well, we've made quite a few changes to our search algorithms this year. When pressed for an answer on the changes, they responded...it's hard to pin down any one change that made a difference since we've made over 450 changes this year.

AGGGGGGGGGGhhhhhhhh 450 changes to the programming on how they rank Web sites in their search results. Give me a break!! I'm reading SEO stuff every day, and attending SEO conferences and trying to keep in tune with what needs to be done to have optimal rankings. 450 times?? Can't you just please give us a dozen or so to try and figure out? 450???

Anyway, not to fret, most were minor programming logic changes, and the best, best, best thing you can do is continue to have a well written Web site that is written for your customer first, search engines second. Over time, with some help from an SEO expert, you can keep ahead of Google's folly's
What is SEM?

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is money you pay to an Internet Marketing company to advertise your business on the Internet. It is not SEO. Search Engine Optimization is the modification of your existing Web site so it shows up in the center area of a search engine results screen.

SEM is a budgeted monthly advertising expense. Consider a budget for SEM just as you would for radio ads, newspaper ads, or billboards. With traditional forms of advertising you pay a certain amount of money for a period of exposure. For example... $300 can get your radio ad played 12 times off-prime time between 9pm and midnight for a week. For $600 you can get the same radio ad played 12 times during prime time between 5pm and 7pm for a week.

SEM pricing works a bit different than set scheduled times on radio, but it's similar in you get better exposure if you pay more. For example, for $2 per click you can get an advertising link to show up between the 5 to 10 ranking area on the right side of the search result page (The right side of the page! You cannot pay to show up in the center of the screen, that is SEO). But for $8 per click, you can get your advertising link to show up between the 1 to 4 ranking area on the right side of the screen. When people do click those ads on the right side of the search results screen, they are more likely to click the top 4 links than the 5th through 10th links. Prime space advertising on the Web cost more money :-)

So, when those companies come a calling, telling you they're going to get you top rankings in Google and Yahoo, what they're trying to do is sell you SEM or Internet Marketing/Advertising. Which may not be a bad thing for your company, but realize it is a monthly marketing expense. And with all advertising/marketing it only works if you consistently use it.
Featured Web Site Omni Consulting
This site is not done yet, but I think it's a really nice example of what you can buy in the way of a design template for $52. It has excellent area segmentation for buy me now messaging. It uses white space effectively, and we were able to modify the overall color scheme of the site to match the clients logo.
