Greetings!

Although the devastation in Haiti is huge, God is doing great things in the midst of the crisis.  As we continue to reach out with tangible expressions of His amazing love we are seeing hearts mended and hope renewed.  An especially moving testimony was recently sent to me by ministry partner, Edward Smith, of Victim Relief Ministry, and I wanted to pass it on to you.

Thank you for caring,

Hope for a Fatherless Generation in Haiti!

Dear Brother Doug-

I want to share this story with you from Haiti. We had 5 wonderful translators that worked with our VRM team on the recent trip to Haiti. They worked right alongside us in every program or outreach we did.

Haiti_Rodney

One of them is pictured in the photo above. His name is Rodney. This young man is bright and wants to be a minister. He is attending a vocational school to learn job skills to support his pursuit of being a full time minister. He has a vibrant and outgoing personality and speaks great English.

As he was working with us in our CISM sessions we noticed some changes in emotions in him. The story he told to us was incredible. When the earthquake hit his sister was trapped in the ruins of the building she was in. When Rodney and other family members came looking for other relatives they found her alive but stuck in the debris; they were unable to get her out.

However for three days they talked to her and were able to get food and water to her.  On the third day she succumbed to her injuries and she is still entombed in the ruins along with thousands of other bodies throughout Haiti.

Then we found out he was raised in an orphanage with no real parents though he visited family relatives and knew of them such as his sister. And here he was working with us in an orphanage.

He would come and spend time with me and we talked on deep spiritual issues. He was a Christian but he enjoyed being reassured and talking about Christ and he especially loved serving alongside us as we served his people.

One day I gave him two of Doug Stringer's books- "Who's Your Daddy Now?" and "Hope for a Fatherless Generation". In reading the first few pages of each book his eyes filled with tears and as he clutched the books to his chest he said- "You do not know how much these books are speaking to me!"

We talked about the personal relationship we have with God our Father and that we are brothers in the family of God. He hugged me and after praying he departed thanking me again for the books and for being able to serve with us.

I hope to work with him again one day soon in Haiti where hundreds of thousands of orphans need to know there is hope for a fatherless generation.

Blessings-

Chaplain Edward Smith

Homes for Haiti

In a recent e-mail we shared with you about our involvement in Homes for Haiti. Already we have 10 homes under construction in the US to head to Haiti.  Many more are needed.

Here are several ways you can get involved in Homes for Haiti:

  • Volunteer at a CORE Alliance site in the USA to build  Homes for Haiti. (go to www.somebodycares.org for locations.)
  • Sponsor a Home for Haiti individually or with a group of friends, family or collegues. ($600 for materials, $720 for materials, transporation and coordination).
  • Recruit a mission team to go to Haiti and help assemble Homes for Haiti on-site.  If you are interested in taking or being part of a team through one of our partners currently serving in Haiti, please contact Vickie Gaskins at 713.621.1498 to discuss details.
  • Pray for the building, transportation, customs clearance, and on-site assembly process.
Together we can give Haitian families a more secure place to live so they can begin rebuilding their lives!

Thank you for your partnership and prayers!

Your continued support of Somebody Cares will allow us to meet the needs of Haiti and beyond.

Sincerely,
