AT THE ANNUAL FLORIDA WRITERS CONFERENCE, October 19-21 at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, you'll choose from some forty workshops to help you hone your craft and navigate the publishing landscape. THE CELEBRITY WORKSHOP on October 18 is a really, really big deal. Award-winning author R.J. Ellory hosts a daylong seminar sponsored by the Florida Writers Foundation. Writing Wrongs: A Workshop on Crime Fiction & Thrillers, for writers of all genres, will be presented the day before the FWA conference starts at the same location. FWA HAS CREATED THE KAYE COPPERSMITH AWARD, to be given annually at the conference. Kaye was an FWA Regional Director, creator and coordinator of FWA's Editing Service, creator and designer of FWA's T-shirt program, and personal editor and mentor to hundreds of writers across the state. She will be forever remembered as Chris Hamilton described her when presenting her the 2010 Vice President's Award: as the welcoming arms of FWA. IN MEMORY OF DAHRIS CLAIR, the top-scoring entry in the Screenwriting genre of Royal Palm Literary Award Competition this year will also win the first annual, newly-created Dahris Clair Award. Dahris Clair was an actress who loved the stage as much as she loved the written word.
VIC DIGENTI'S NOVEL IN A DAY WORKSHOP will take place November 3 in Tampa. Everyone is welcome to attend, but FWA members receive a special, reduced price. The workshop packs a year's worth of learning into a day-long interactive session filled with practical advice and solid instruction covering:
- Elements of plot and structure
- Creating characters that sizzle
- Secrets of good dialogue
- Crafting strong beginnings, middles and ends
