Opportunities

PUBLICIZE YOUR BOOK TRAILER OR COVER. New this year, FWA will run an audio-visual show in the Main Hall during all three days of the annual conference. There will be photo-slides from past conferences (can't you see the crowds clustering to see themselves and their friends?), advertisements, and book trailers. The ads and trailers will run every half hour, meaning that your trailer or book cover will run an estimated 36 times. Learn more...

GET "PUBLISHED" ON FWA'S OFFICIAL NEW T-SHIRT. Come up with a slogan for FWA's new T-shirt (to be available at our Tenth Annual Conference in October), and if your suggestion wins, you'll win a shirt! Email your entries (brief slogan) along with your contact information to Kim Hackett no later than September 1, 2011, and FWA's Board of Directors will pick the message they feel is the cleverest and flaunts our affiliation best. If you win, you can point to your free shirt and say, "I wrote that."

SELL YOUR BOOKS in the conference bookstore. Download information on the main website.

ROYAL PALM LITERARY AWARDS is coming to a close. Beginning July 1, a late fee applies to all entries, bringing the cost to $50. Contest closes July 16. Check out the guidelines...

EVERYONE WHO SENT AN ENTRY TO FWA COLLECTIONS has been notified. If you're still waiting to hear, contact Chrissy Jackson. Winners will be posted on the website soon.

THE FLORIDA WRITERS FOUNDATION thanks the Visual Arts Association of The Villages for donating 26 pictures (and counting) to be offered at FWF's Silent Auction, which will be held at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary hotel during the conference. FWF thanks other donors, as well. Pictures and descriptions of all donations will be posted to the Silent Auction website soon.

YOUR SILENT AUCTION DONATION helps the Florida Writers Foundation's mission to support and promote literacy. Contact Wilma Fleming for more information.

ATTENTION CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHORS. The Florida Writers Foundation may be partnering with another group to bring enthusiasm for reading to school children. FWF will purchase  books to be read by volunteers in classrooms, and every student would then receive the gift of a signed copy of that book. The program has not been finalized at this point; we're just collecting information. If you think you might want to participate and have published a children's book, please send your name along with title, price, and age level for the book to Chrissy Jackson.

FWA's YOUTH WRITERS PROGRAM is a new initiative delivering creative writing workshops to children and teens at their local schools and community centers. Read more about it and contact the leadership team if you're interested in having a youth writers group in your area or want to become a Youth Group Leader.

CONTEST: NAME FWA'S ONLINE BOOKSTORE. Send your entry to  Serena Schrieber. The winner will be announced in the next issue of The Florida Writer.

In Memoriam
ray andrewsBoth the Florida Writers Foundation and the Florida Writers Association recently lost a great friend and supporter. Ray Andrews passed away, leaving a big hole in the creative flow that energized both the local Oxford Writers Group which he regularly attended as well as the marketing for the Foundation, which he directed.

After a long and illustrious career in the public sector creating jingles for some well-known products, Ray brought his sense of humor, his smiles, and his inimitable style to Florida to share with us. We'll miss him deeply.
