WRITING TIPS

This timely tip comes from Daniel Griffith:

On May 12, 2008, postal rates will
increase from $0.41 to $0.42. Because editors and agents are likely to respond to your submission after May 12, you may want to start including the new postal rate on your SASE now.

"The line of dialogue belongs to the character; the verb is the writer sticking his nose in. But 'said' is far less intrusive than grumbled, gasped, cautioned, lied. " --Elmore Leonard

CHAPTER EVENTS & NEWS: Writers Helping Writers

APRIL 2: Lisa Blue, YA librarian at the Winter Park Public Library and leader of the library's Teen Book Club, will bring some active readers to the ORLANDO meeting. They'll answer questions, and attendees can learn right from the source exactly what young adult/teen readers look for in a book.

APRIL 6: The Second Annual PASCO COUNTY/NEW PORT RICHEY writers conference.

APRIL 8: Charisse Phelps unbends the fiction writer's mind with a review of Point of View at the JACKSONVILLE River City Writers meeting.

APRIL 10: Kaye Coppersmith will edit up to five pages of several manuscripts she has received from group members in advance. She'll explain her editing notes at the
ST. PETERSBURG meeting, so that everyone can learn from her suggestions.

APRIL 15: Brevard's MELBOURNE group will discuss
the elements that make words into stories people want to read or listen to. After that, they'll focus on a comprehensive review of one or two writer's works, chosen at random.

APRIL 30: Early registration deadline for the 2nd Annual One-Day Conference presented by NE Florida Chapter taking place on May 17. This is a hot ticket!  Last year organizers were forced to close registrations early, because they had more people than they could handle, and this year they've put together a fabulous slate of speakers. Don't delay! Register now.
