Over 400 County residents have completed the training and more than half of them have continued as active members of their neighborhood teams.

Topics included in the training are disaster preparedness, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, fire suppression, terrorism, disaster psychology and team organization.

Mike's Café: A Hand-Carved Deli Graces Ballston, Again

A Review by Mark Robert Hays, Cambridge Associates

Two hours into my first job upon graduating college, I was already hungry.  Not used to being up before noon and nervous for the first day, I had skipped breakfast and was now paying the price.  As I stared at the clock, which was arduously ticking towards eleven, I whispered to my new colleague if he knew of any good food in the area. His only response? "I know there's a McDonalds in the mall."

At this point, wishing I hadn't worked so hard in college and could instead enjoy another semester of free all-you-can eat cafeterias, I worked up the nerve to ask around the office for other tips. All fingers pointed towards Rocklands - seemingly the only provider of sandwhiches chock full of fresh slabs of meats, cheese and sauces. One day in late August, I took my usual lunchtime jaunt to the spot to find it inexplicably closed

For months afterward, I roamed the streets searching for something, anything that could compare to Rockland's freshly carved sandwiches, but nothing stood up to the test.  Luckily for us in the Ballston area, we've finally been graced with a worthy fresh carving follower: Mike's Café.

Opened in early February on Stuart Street, Mike's offers a fresh array of whole slabs of several meats, carved to order for every sandwich.  Each sandwich can be dressed with any number of cheeses and toppings, while finished with dozens of sauces and placed on almost ten different types of same-day delivered bread. The combinations of sandwiches are endless, and with the incredible freshness of all of the ingredients, each one will always taste outstanding.

Better yet, Mike's manages to outdo Jackson's (and what likely will prove to be the difference maker in financial success) with its prices. Sandwiches packed to the brim with meat, cheese, and toppings are all priced under $6.00, with a daily special of $6.95 including chips and a drink.  The seating is limited, but with spring just around the corner, the adjacent courtyard should prove the perfect spot to enjoy Mike's.

After the cold and seemingly never-ending winter made worse with suddenly a lack of a truly great sandwich spot in Ballston, ring in the new season with a lunch trip to Mike's Cafe.

The one downside: after a few trips, packing bagged lunches in the morning will get even harder. In this case, it's a problem I can deal with; I'm just happy when my stomach's growling at 11AM, I know exactly where I'm headed.

The Ballston Partnership, founded in 1985, is a public-private organization of property owners, developers, businesses, educational institutions, non-profits, residents, condominium and civic associations.
