Arlington's Community Energy Plan Process Begins
The broad-based Task Force, established by County Board Chair Jay Fisette, will assist the County in
identifying goals, actions, and strategies for reducing Arlington's county-wide
greenhouse gas emissions, culminating with the development of a Community
Energy Plan. In addition, a liaison
group to the Task Force has been created to further open the process to the
community.
The liaison group consists of community stakeholders including our very own Pamela Kahn, Executive
Director of the Ballston Partnership. Ms. Kahn is a member of this group representing
the interests of the Ballston and Virginia Square areas. Three community energy town hall
meetings will be held as part of the process as well; dates and times to be
determined.
This effort represents
an extension of the County's Fresh AIRE program - Arlington Initiative to
Reduce Emissions - which began in 2007 to lower County government greenhouse
gas emissions 10% from 2000 to 2012. Follow the process online at www.arlingtonva.us/energyplan.

Tutto Bene: In This Case, It's True
A Review by Mark Robert Hays, Cambridge Associates Trying to find an Italian joint serving heaping portions of
food (servings even the cast members of Good
Fellas would be proud of)? You'll be out of luck in a city like
Washington. Sure, these places
might exist in New York, but in a city relatively adolescent to the Italian
food scene, you'll either find obnoxiously small portions that are entirely
overpriced or dumbed-down, greasy meatball subs on Kaiser rolls shoved at you
from behind a counter.
What the aptly titled Tutto Bene ("Everything is Good")
offers is classic, no-nonsense Italian-American food. Unpretentious in portion and
atmosphere, Tutto Bene's dishes come straight from the heart of
Italian-Americans. For the
unaware, one won't find alfredo sauce, meatballs, or pepperoni in Italy; these
American ingredients only appear on families' dinner tables and thankfully for
us in Ballston, menus like Tutto Bene's. When I enter, long tables filled with large families
enjoying dinner encompass the room adorned with Italian landscapes while West
Side Story's (the quintessential Italian-American musical, no less) "Maria" blasts
overhead. It's comforting that a
restaurant can still exist and thrive like Tutto Bene: a family run operation
that truly knows its audience and provides the comforting atmosphere and food
that so many so desperately miss at the corporate, squeaky clean restaurants
with celebrity chefs and personality-less menus. I've had "true" Italian meals in Venice, Florence, and Rome,
and what all of the restaurants shared were no frills menus of simple dishes of
regional ingredients and more importantly, a true sense of welcoming and a
feeling that you are family when dining there. Despite outer appearances and differences in raw ingredients,
Tutto Bene is not so far off from the classic eateries sprinkled across
Italy. Both make no apologies for
what they serve and make no attempt to wow you with scenery or new-age twists
on Italian fare. More importantly, they hit straight at the heart of the most
important of Italian restaurant values: instilling a sense of family and
offering large, hearty classics with no apologies. As I dig into my pasta combination dish of manicotti,
gnocchi alfredo, and lasagna (I was hungry), I think for the first time since
Christmas, "Just like Grandma used to (and still) makes." Don't let the exterior or simple menu
fool you. Whether you bring all
twenty five family members or dine alone, one thing is certain: you'll leave
full, content, and truly feeling like family. And the food? Tutto bene!
