Capitals to Host Blood Drive at Kettler Capitals Iceplex
Participants will receive Mike Green T-shirt, autographed photo

The Washington Capitals have teamed up with the Inova Blood Donor Services to host their second-annual blood drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 8 AM to 5 PM at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Last season, the Caps Inova Blood Drive collected 415 units of blood from 462 Caps fans, the most successful blood donation campaign hosted by the Capitals.

The first 500 people to schedule an appointment and attempt to give blood that day will receive a Mike Green jersey T-shirt and an autographed photo.  All donors will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets with suite level seating - nine pairs of tickets will be drawn.

"Donating blood makes a significant difference and helps save lives," said Capitals defenseman Mike Green. "This is an important issue where everyone can help. I encourage all Caps fans to come out, participate and help others."  The Caps are also planning a spring blood drive for March 2010.

Donors can make an appointment now by calling 1-866-BLOODSAVES (1-866-256-6372) or sign up online HERE. Click on the "Schedule an Appointment" button (on the right side), and use sponsor code 7441 or zip code 22203 to find the Capitals drive.

Appointments are required and walk-ins will not be permitted to donate. There is limited space available - only the first 500 fans to sign up will be able to participate. The entire donation process takes approximately one hour.

Arlington County Pandemic Flu Information

We are reminding everyone to start taking steps now to reduce the economic and public health toll of a potentially tough flu season.  Businesses can play a critical role in stopping the spread of the influenza virus. Arlington County Public Health and the Office of Emergency Management are managing a public information campaign emphasizing the following things to promote hygiene:

   - Cover your cough/sneeze
   - Wash your hands often
   - Stay at home if you are ill
   - Don't return to work until 24 hours after the fever breaks
   - Get a flu shot

Businesses can do their part by taking precautions and promoting good hygiene. Employers should start planning how they can reduce flu transmissions among employees and how to deal with absenteeism.  Businesses are also urged to be flexible with their sick leave policies and to consider allowing employees to work from home, if necessary.

1Gen Thai: A King Amongst Many

A review by Mark Robert Hays, Cambridge Associates

Over the years, major cities across the country have taken on a specialty for a cuisine, sometimes seemingly without rhyme or reason. Chicago has its pizza, Philadelphia its cheesesteaks; New York has its reuban, Boston, its seafood.  But when asked for one specialty DC holds, one food doesn't come to mind.

Sure, we have Ben's Chili Bowl ... but are we known for our chili?  We have hundreds of fantastic restaurants, but do any of them embody a specialty cuisine the city holds all on its own?

In recent years, an interesting and unexpected cuisine has taken hold: Thai. From the ultra elegant to the hole in the wall takeout joints, there's seemingly a Thai establishment around every corner of the city. Thus, making it difficult to separate the ones embodying thisThai cuisine renaissance in the area and the ones simply exploiting the popularity of it.

Luckily for those of us living or working in the Ballston area, a truly excellent Thai restaurant resides minutes from the metro: 1Gen Thai.

Claiming to be "not just another Thai restaurant," with food served "the way it's served in Thailand," 1Gen Thai's menu boldly flaunts its excellence. The typical Thai food is all here; its pad thai is a perfect rendition, with a heaping portion of buttery, spicy noodles, while its soups have the perfect blend of vegetables and spice.

However, it's 1Gen's homemade curries that separate the restaurant from the rest.  The red curry is an excellent pick, packing a sauce with a robust punch of spice, bamboo shoots, and meat that leaves your mouth on fire with every bite (in a good way, of course).  The panang curry, 1Gen's trademark specialty, and one that is very rarely seen at Thai restaurants, is the perfect curry of coconut milk and peanut sauce, mixed with a meat of choice and steamed broccoli.

The menu is extensive, with a multiple soups, salads, appetizers, rice and noodle entrees, and even a large dessert menu (try the banana crème brûlée).  Moreover, it features simple dishes that it knows it will do best, while the atmosphere is made up of the perfect decor to make you feel like you're in a different world for the meal.

The next time visitors are in town raving of their city's pizza or cheesesteaks, take them to 1Gen Thai and show them what the D.C. area has to offer.
