Hired Power

Dear Friends and Colleagues;

In November and December, as a Nation, we turn our focus toward Gratitude and Giving.  This tradition offers an amazing way to wrap up each year by reflecting on our amazing journey.  For the Season of Giving particularly, the most treasured gifts are those of the heart, reflecting Gratitude.  The time and spirit put into a gift carries the significance of delivering the message of our sincerity.

Within the Recovery Industry, we are fortunate in the fact that we hold our focus upon these two imperative principles year round.  Each gift packaged and delivered as uniquely as the individual for whom it is intended.  Seldom is the package of tangible material, yet the contents are priceless, for these gifts are of ourselves.

The clients we serve are entrusted to us, fragile at times, but in any state are always receiving unwavering compassion and support.  Evidenced in many heartfelt stories, we each experience their growth, understanding and hope for a new and better life.

Blessed are we to work within a profession where so much Gratitude and Giving is evidenced in each moment.  Reciprocity, with clients and colleagues alike, allows each of us to experience various degrees of these gifts... encouraging us in times of need and inspiring us for continued growth.

May we always continue living and serving by these principles.  Nurturing our bonds while establishing new connections with those we meet.   Together we hold the responsibility and power of sustaining this wonderful industry and way of life, serving those in need for many, many years to come.

The Hired Power Team sends Best Wishes to you and yours during this celebrated Season.  May you enjoy time with your loved ones and find inspiration in each Gift you give and receive.

All our best,

Most Docs return to work after Addiction Treatment

"Studies have estimated that about ten percent of doctors will abuse drugs or alcohol at some point during their careers -- similar to figures in the general population."

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Surgeons and other types of doctors were equally likely to return to medical practice after being treated for drug or alcohol addiction, in a new study.

The study included 144 surgeons and 636 other physicians, including family practice doctors and anesthesiologists, who were treated for a substance abuse disorder in 16 different state physician health programs from 1995 to 2001.

Physician health programs allow doctors to be treated for drug abuse and addiction without repercussions as long as they complete program contracts, including random testing, and recover before returning to practice.

The participating doctors, mostly men, and in their mid-40s, on average, were followed for five years after treatment to see how many of them fulfilled the contracts and if they went back to work.

Alcohol abuse was the most common reason for enrolling in the physician health programs, and was more prevalent in surgeons than non-surgeons. Other reasons for treatment included opioid, stimulant and sedative abuse.

About one in five surgeons and non-surgeons had a positive alcohol or drug test result after treatment, and the same number were reported to state licensing boards because of relapses or non-compliance with the programs.

Still, after five years, 60 to 65 percent of all doctors had completed post-treatment monitoring contracts, and as many as 75 percent had their licenses restored and were practicing medicine again.

Community Awareness...

Colleges Address Partying with New Students

The following is a letter that my son received during his first week at college.  I found their approach insightful in addressing what we as professionals continue to see as a growing concern for our young adults.          - Nanette

UCLA Glitter

Dear Bruin,

We hope your first weeks here at UCLA have been great. As you immerse yourself in your academic work, and embody the core values of being a True Bruin -- integrity, excellence, accountability, respect, and service - we hope that you are enjoying the many social activities here on campus.
At UCLA, we are here to support and encourage you to have fun and be safe at the same time.
For more information on safe party laws and tips, go to:

We want to remind you that while some may have the perception that partying with alcohol is a big part of the college experience, at UCLA students tend to drink much less alcohol than students on college campuses across the nation. Studies show that 1/4 of our students don't drink at all, and if they do, the average is around 2 drinks. What does this mean for you? You don't have to drink, or drink a lot, to have a good time!

Police Party Patrols --

To help keep you safe and empower you to make good decisions, keep in mind that increased Police Party Patrols will continue during Week 1-especially on the nights of September 29th and 30th. These patrols made by the UC Police department will take place in the residential areas adjacent to campus. If anyone is found to be breaking the law, citations will be issued.

Know the law! --

- It is illegal to drink, or be in possession of alcohol if you are under the age of 21; you can lose your drivers' license for a year if caught;

- No matter what age you are, it is illegal to give/serve alcohol to anyone who is under the age of 21;

- It is illegal and risky to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

Safety First! --

If you or a friend is in trouble, be ready to call for help. Program these important numbers into your cell phone:

- UCLA Police: 911 from a campus phone, or (310) 000-0000 from your cell phone
- UCLA Community Service Officer walking escort service: (310)-000-0000
- UCLA Emergency Medical Service (EMS): (310) 000-0000

We welcome you to UCLA, and support you in making good choices as you start a successful new year!
