Dear Friends & Professionals:
We,
as Americans, as people, can be a very thankful bunch. Our yearly calendars are
spotted with days when we express our gratitude and thankfulness to various
individuals and entities. On Veteran's Day we thank the men and women of our Armed
Forces for their dedicated service and fight for freedom. On Memorial Day we
show our gratitude to those courageous individuals who made the ultimate
sacrifice while defending our liberties and democratic lifestyle. On Labor Day
we express our appreciation to the industrious American workforce; the people
who keep the wheels of our economy and country turning. On other selected days
we pause to thank different historical groups and individuals who have made
valuable contributions to the betterment of our nation. And then there is
Thanksgiving, a day when we thank G-d for
enabling all the above -- and for all else He does for us.
In
America, President Abraham Lincoln
officially set aside the last Thursday of November, in 1863, "as a day of
thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father." Congress ruled that after
1941, the fourth Thursday of November be observed as Thanksgiving Day and be a
legal holiday.
While
the importance of expressing deserved gratitude is self understood, taking the
day to prepare, cook, spend time with friends and loved ones involves more than just words -- it requires a
commitment of presence, task and time. In that we share the belief that
gratitude must express itself in deeds. Taking
the time to celebrate this holiday, this tradition of gratitude shows that our
thankfulness to G-d does not just reside in the realm of emotions, thoughts, or
even speech, but in our actions. As in our calendars time marked for
thankfulness needs to be shown in our daily living.
This
November I find myself most thankful for the life G-d has given me, my health and
the health of those I love. I am thankful for a wonderful loving family and the
daily treasures they bring to my life. I am grateful for my strong-willed and
stubborn husband who is not only my rock but a best friend who supports me in
my desires to be the best of who I am. I am thankful, as an individual, that I
have choices- I choose to be happy- I choose to see the glass half full- I
choose to dedicate my career to my passion for people, healing and families. And
last but not least I am thankful for Hired Power, the gifts it brings to my
life and the lives of those we serve, as well as the opportunity to grow and
develop through the challenges and struggles of finding balance in work, family,
and fun.
In life there is and will always be those
things that we can complain about, but there is and always will be much to be
thankful for. As our lives become increasingly fast paced and full of
responsibilities, take time for the actual "giving of thanks to G-d" during this
Thanksgiving holiday, after which will leave plenty of time for loved ones and feasting.
All my best-

Ensuring Better
Access to Treatment for People Suffering From Mental IllnessFamily & The Relapse Syndrome
|
|
Sponsored by US Representative Patrick
Kennedy:
PAUL WELLSTONE AND PETE DOMENICI MENTAL HEALTH PARITY AND
ADDICTION EQUITY ACT OF 2008
Mental illness and substance abuse affects millions of
families across the country. Without treatment, those suffering from mental
illness and substance abuse often struggle to hold a job or make ends meet.
Today, approximately forty-four million Americans suffer from mental illness,
but only one-third receive treatment. A key component of this problem is that
private health insurers generally provide less coverage for mental illnesses
and substance abuse than for other medical conditions. A 2002 Kaiser Family
Foundation study found that, while 98 percent of workers with
employer-sponsored health insurance had coverage for mental health care, 74
percent of those workers were subject to annual outpatient visit limits, and 64
percent were subject to annual inpatient daily limits.
Ensuring Better
Access to Treatment for People Suffering From Mental Illness
The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction
Equity Act of 2008, passed
by the House on September 23, 2008 by a vote of 376-47 and included in the
Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 signed into law on October 3,
2008, will allow employers to offer more comprehensive mental health coverage
without significant additional cost, while significantly reducing out-of-pocket
costs for plan participants.
H.R. 6983 does not mandate group health plans provide any mental health
coverage. However, if a plan does offer mental health coverage, then, it
requires:
- Equity in financial
requirements, such as deductibles, co-payments, coinsurance, and
out-of-pocket expenses.
- Equity in treatment
limits, such as caps on the frequency or number of visits, limits
on days of coverage, or other similar limits on the scope and duration of
treatment.
- Equality in
out-of-network coverage.
H.R. 6983 would not affect state laws that offer stronger consumer
protections.

Transitioning from treatment to daily living is very
emotional and challenging. Often, utilizing the newly learned skills and
information necessary to achieve long-term recovery is blocked with fear and
anxiety. The moment of discharge from a treatment setting through the initial
seven days is an extremely high-risk period of early recovery. Our Certified
Personal Recovery Assistants accompany clients during these
transition periods. We assist in the application of the newly acquired skills
and information making the discharge plan into a daily living plan. We are
there in the quiet hours, involved in the daily schedule, supporting the client
in connecting with the identified treatment professionals and fellowship in
their area and following through with learning to live a healthy focused
lifestyle. In essence we help to increase the success of the journey to long-term
recovery.
