Spring Renewal
Mar/Apr 2008

Greetings Friends & Colleagues,

When I was a young girl, March Madness meant sitting next to my father on the couch and watching NCAA Men's basketball. It was a time of the year I always looked forward to, getting quality time with my father, rooting for the underdog team, and getting to yell and jump up and down on the couch without my mother's disapproval. Who could wish for more! As an adult, March Madness has taken on a whole different meaning. It seems to be directed towards our work, personal business and lifestyles, keeping up with busy schedules, phone calls, travel and family, with little time to slow down and enjoy the onset of Spring.

Spring is a time for beginnings and a time for renewal. I hope as spring approaches you will find time to enjoy the special moments in life. The times, places, and things you will cherish and remember, that carry you through the days that feel like March Madness!

This spring, I'm experiencing some of my own March Madness, BUT, I am still rooting for UCLA, and my father and I enjoyed the games together over the phone.  And YES, I still jump up and down on the couch and eat junk food --  which, I have discovered, is a great way to let go of the madness and welcome the spring!

As we are working with our clients this month, help them to slow down and find some time to welcome spring -- each moment is an opportunity for a new beginning.

With Hope & Promise.

Spring, Renewal, Rebirth

  Breathing, photo/art by Shayla Maddox

Flowers begin to bloom, trees begin to leaf. Despite everything, despite the extremes of winter, the extremes of human conflict, spring arrives.

Sit quietly with the rebirth that is happening all around you. Feel that rebirth in your own heart. Each breath is in its way a rebirth. As you breathe in, breathe in the energy of life. As you breathe out, breathe out the energy of life. Life gives life to life, eternally, in endless cycle. There is no stopping life. As you breathe, feel the flow. Ice melting, water flowing, flowers growing.

Where will that flow take you this month, this spring? You can't know. For just a moment, let go of having to know. There is a flow of energy in the universe so much greater than you, than what you can understand. It doesn't always seem to want what you want, to take you where you want to go. Its agenda is not always the human agenda; that flow unconditionally supports all existence. Take a breath, feel the flow. The breath represents that flow of energy in the universe. Your breath carries you and supports you always.

May all beings be happy, peaceful and free of suffering.

Fast Pace Your Walking Benefits

Alberta Centre

Walking for exercise is a big waste of time if you don't put some hustle in your steps, say
University of Alberta
researchers.

The popularity of 10,000 step a day pedometer programs prompted researchers to compare the health benefits of daily walking with a traditional cardio-based fitness program involving treadmills and stationary bikes, says lead researcher Dr. Vicki Harber, a physical education and recreation professor at the Edmonton, Alberta-based campus.

In a six-month study of 128 sedentary men and women, those who exercised at a moderate intensity - defined as the ability to cary on a conversation during activity - experienced greater health benefits, such as better aerobic fitness and lower blood pressure. Those on a 10,000-step program got health benefits but much less than the traditional group.

"Our concern is that people might think what matters most is the total number of daily steps accumulated and not pay much attention to the pace or effort invested in taking these s steps," Harber says.
