Welcoming in the New Year! Jan/Feb 2008

Dear Friends and Professionals,

Well, we're off and running for 2008!  With the New Year comes the excitement and energy for implementing new plans, strategizing with like-minded professionals on new programs, and taking a close look at how we can be even more effective in meeting the needs of the individuals in our care.

Transition is a term we are starting to hear more and more across the treatment and mental health industry. Professionals realize that treatment is effective and a well thought out structured discharge plan can lead to a client's successful recovery. Knowing this information also leads us to know that the application of the information learned and developed in treatment along with the discharge charge plan falls short for most clients. The majority of clients left to their own skills cannot apply the information into their daily living plan. Application is key to successful transition.

At Hired Power, our experience and services are focused purely on the client's transition. We support admissions teams in assisting clients to the door of treatment, creating a safe passage in what is often a time of crisis. We partner with case managers during the course of treatment to accompany clients who need to leave the safety of the program for court or a family emergency situation; therefore increasing the opportunity of a safe return to program. Often times we support clients in their transition between levels of care, assisting them with the stressors and road blocks of travel and diminishing the possibility of getting "lost" along the way. Most often we are utilized to walk beside a client on their return home from treatment. We provide the necessary guidance, support and mentor-ship in the application of the information learned into a successful transition into their recovery community.

Staying true to our mission of supporting a successful transition Hired Power has increased our services to include providing our clients with continued monitoring. This extension of services again focuses on the transition time when our Personal Recovery Assistants complete the in home work with the client. Our clients will continue to receive random urinalysis testing, weekly phone sessions with a case monitor and follow up to ensure the commitment to the aftercare plan with community professionals and fellowship programs.

We are excited to be part of the pioneering of new services and support for the clients, families and professionals we serve across the country. Stay tuned to next months newsletter to hear about our exciting East Coast developments!! Thank you again to all of you who continue to support, offer guidance and work to build the bridge of recovery through a successful transition plan!

Changing Lives one Client at a time!

It's letters like this one, from a recent client, that propel the Hired Power team forward with energy and enthusiasm to reach out and help change lives one client a time....

From: Jim K

When I left (the treatment center) I hooked up with Tom M (a Hired Power certified personal recovery assistant).  He has so far lived with me here for the past two weeks, traveling to AA meetings and beyond -- giving me 24 / 7 support and guidance.

Tom has lengthy and solid sobriety. His focus has been on me ... which has helped me focus with intensity on myself in today.

It's difficult for me to accurately express how remarkable this experience has been for me ... helping me in every way transition from treatment to "real life." I have had a spiritual awakening by his side.

It's so great.

I've known for years that the answer to my problems would only be found by a solid connection to the "whole" and Tom has helped guide me in this direction.

He has been instrumental in helping me get grounded in an excellent AA community and has been an inspiration to me and to other recovering people here.

My great challenge -- as you know -- is leaving treatment and falling into isolation and disconnection. The gifts I have experienced as the result of this transition are countless. Most importantly, I feel sober, happy, joyous and free.

I have huge gratitude to you and (treatment center) for giving me the headstart ... and to Tom and Hired Power for gently and thoroughly walking me into a community.

It's really somethin'.

Courage Made Possible!

Safe and Structured Transitions
Safe Passage
Support during transition periods is essential.  Applying information learned during the course of treatment can be very emotional and challenging.   Often, the road to long term recovery is blocked with fear, anxiety and the lack of ability to follow a developed treatment plan.  The first three to seven days after discharge from a treatment setting is a high-risk period of early recovery.  This is the time when a Hired Power Certified Personal Recovery Assistant can be of the most benefit; by providing the recovering client with the support they need to be courageous enough to make the transition into recovery.
  • PRA's accompany clients during transisitions.
  • Assist them in applying new skills, thoughts and ideas into a daily living plan.
  • Connect the client with identified treatment professionals in their community.
  • Support the client with integrating a lifestyle of recovery into the activities of their daily life.

In essence, a PRA can provide the essential support and skills needed to maintain the clients sobriety during the high-risk transition periods.

Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.
