Dear Friends and Professionals,
If you Google "holiday survival", you will find thousands of websites devoted to the idea that the holidays cause stress, debt, loneliness, binging, relapses, depression, sadness, and a myriad of other reactions and circumstances that are in direct opposition to the "Be Merry" attitude that is being proselytized throughout our media and culture. That is not to say, that there aren't plenty of websites devoted to "Being Merry" for the holidays - it's just that, in the profession we are in, we are more prone to hear about the 'harmful' effects of the holiday season more than the joyful accounts of the holiday season.
It is an unfortunate consequence that this is also the time of year where we see the highest rates of Relapse into harmful behaviors and habits by our clients on the road to a lifestyle of recovery.
So, what can we do as professionals and caregivers for the lives of the individuals in our care, struggling on the journey to remain sober and harm-free during the holidays?
- Recommend a Certified Personal Recovery Assistant. A mentor to be there, one-on-one, in the moment, leading by example, sharing experience, strength, and hope - to guide, and support recovery based living throughout the Holiday season and into the New Year.
- Give them tools. Take a look below, where we've included some ways for handling relapse inducing factors over the holidays, some alternative relapse prevention models, and some strategic ways to develop a relapse prevention plan. .
We hope your holiday season is Joy-Filled! It is our pleasure to look forward to another significant year of the benefits of providing Personal Recovery Assistants to support the services offered by our partners and affiliates in the alcohol, drug, behavioral, and mental health treatment professions!
With Hope and Promise!

In the Stages of Change Model, the Personal Recovery Assistant becomes an extraordinary asset during the Action/Willpower and Maintenance stages. PRA's are in a unique position to be able to provide preventative relapse measures, while assisting the client with transitioning into a harm-free, joyful life.

The stages of change are
Precontemplation (Not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed).
Contemplation (Acknowledging that there is a problem but not yet ready or sure of wanting to make a change).
Preparation/Determination (Getting ready to change)
Action/Willpower (Changing behavior)
Maintenance (Maintaining the behavior change) and
Relapse (Returning to older behaviors and abandoning the new changes).
Transcendance (Old behaviors and bad habits are no longer an integral part of life, and returning to them would be atypical, abnormal and even weird. A new and changed person has evolved.)
