Recap: Southern BioProducts and Renewable Energy Conference

The 10th Annual Southern Bioproducts and Renewable Energy Conference was held from May 10th through 11th at the Beau Rivage Resort and Hotel in Biloxi, MS.  The event, which was hosted by the Mississippi Biomass and Renewable Energy Council, included a variety of different speakers and presentations and was attended by over 100 people.  Topics covered at the conference ranged from national security issues to regional and global economic impacts of renewable energy.  Speakers included policy-makers, private sector representatives, economic developers, and academics.  A pre-conference workshop on combined heating and power (CHP) was presented jointly by staff from Mississippi State University and North Carolina State University.  Dr. Martha Saunders, President of the University of Southern Mississippi, discussed the university's sustainability initiative during her keynote address.

An important event for Strategic Biomass Solutions at this conference was the official unveiling of the First Annual Mississippi Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Report.  This report has been complied to give concerned parties information regarding the status of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Mississippi.  The report is aimed at policy-makers, entrepreneurs, economic developers, and the general public interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and can be accessed for free via the Strategic Biomass Solutions website.

A major highlight of each Southern Bioproducts and Renewable Energy Conference is the student poster competition.  A wide range of research was presented this year, exhibiting the region's strength in research and development with respect to biomass and renewable energy.  Students from Mississippi State University swept the competition this year, with first being taken by Adebola Coker (Engineering), Omkar Joshi (Forest Resources) taking second, and third place being awarded to Divya Reddy Parapati (Forest Resources).  The conference was organized jointly by the Mississippi Technology Alliance - Strategic Biomass Solutions, Bagley College of Engineering at MSU, US DOE Southeast Clean Energy Application Center, and the 25x'25 initiative.
