The Australian government has committed to a $1.5 billion boost to first home buyers grants. Under the plan, first home buyers who purchase a newly constructed dwelling are now eligible for grants of up to $21,000, an increase of $14,000. Grants for buyers who purchase established homes have doubled to $14,000.
The $21,000 first home buyers grant applies to new homes that are fixed to land (houses, units, townhouses, apartments). For first home buyers purchasing second hand houses and apartments the grant is $14,000. Purchasers must meet all the eligibility criteria including being a permanent Australian resident. New grants apply to any contract signed from 14 October 2008 and must settle by 30 June 2009. The residence must be lived in by the purchaser for a minimum of 6 months immediately after purchase.
Interest rates - special 
On 7 October 2008, the Reserve Bank Of Australia (RBA) dropped interest rate by the full 1 basis point ( 1%).
Australian interest rates are tipped to fall to the lowest level since 2001. Macquarie Group interest rate strategist said the RBA would cut the cash rate, now at 6%, to 4.25% over the next year. That would be equal to where the cash rate was in December 2001. Interest rates have not fallen below that level since January 1990. Debt futures markets are expecting two bigger than usual interest rate cuts by Christmas. They expect the RBA to cut interest rates by 0.75% in November and follow up with another 0.75% in December.
Aussie Dollar - Outlook 
The old saying that the AUD goes up the stairs and down the elevator holds true.
At the writing of this article, 1 AUD = 0.6676 US$. This is an opportunity for Australian expatriates and overseas investors to remit their foreign deposits into Australian investment properties. There is a window to expotentially leverage this opportunity.
