Teacher Spotlight:
SERF Fosters the Development of Great Ideas in Elementary Science
by Karen McCarthy, K-8 Curriculum Specialist for Science and Social Studies

Karen McCarthy, K-8 Curriculum Specialist for Science and Social Studies, has implemented a number of new district-wide science initiatives funded by SERF Enrichment grants. Here, she shares a few projects benefiting our elementary students across the district.

In the 2008-2009 school year, SERF funded a variety of exciting science-related grants. One such project allowed teachers to investigate the development and implementation of "Science Notebooks" in the elementary classroom as a tool for enhancing scientific inquiry and literacy. One teacher from each of the elementary schools, a literacy specialist, and both the science and language arts curriculum coordinators attended a workshop to learn key understandings about science notebooks and how they maximize student learning. Daniel Garrigan-Byerly, a grade 3 teacher at Haynes, is putting his workshop experience to use in his classroom. Garrigan-Byerly points out, "Scientist's notebooks get to the heart of why students need to learn science in school. The focus of teaching and learning can be the question, communication and connection to the science concept. I need to spend far less time 'teaching science' since the kids are actually being scientists. The notebooks provide a structure for focused questioning, written communication, and authentic academic discourse with peers! The science content and vocabulary are natural byproducts if these things are done well. I can't think of a better learning environment." Science Notebooks are currently being piloted in six classrooms and the work will be shared through the district through these teacher leaders.

"A greater emphasis will be made on renewable vs. nonrenewable forms of energy as students explore models of a mini-generator, solar house, and hydro-electric power."
-Karen McCarthy, K-8 Science and Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, on updates to the 4th grade unit on Electricity

SERF also awarded the "Education for a Green Future" grant in the spring of 2009. Teachers have an important role to play in preparing students to become both scientifically literate and environmentally responsible citizens. This grant allowed a group of K-8 teachers to update the science curriculum to integrate more "green" topics.  Teachers researched ways to integrate a greater emphasis on environmental issues of sustainability, climate change, and renewable energy into the science units that are currently being taught. Additionally, through the SERF grant, these teachers explored supplementary topics for possible future units. The teachers are disseminating this work through presentations at faculty meetings and through the science curriculum maps that teachers use to plan instruction. An example of this important work can be seen in the changes within the grade 4 electricity unit. A greater emphasis will be made on renewable vs. nonrenewable forms of energy as students explore models of a mini-generator, solar house, and hydro-electric power.

Grants in Action:
New SmartBoard Technology in LSRHS Math Department
SERF has funded grants to the LS Math Department to introduce a number of high-tech learning tools into their classrooms; the SmartBoard interactive electronic whiteboard, the Smart Response system (formerly known as Senteo clickers), a document camera and TI-Smart View graphing calculators. Math Department Coordinator, Virginia Blake, explains how these tools are used with the students.

To prepare a lesson, I begin by creating a Notebook software file. This lesson contains class examples and practice problems, homework and classwork problems, solutions, diagrams, definitions and steps in an algorithm. Once created, the lesson is there to be reused and improved over time. During class, I display the presentations on the SmartBoard and can add to them by solving problems by hand (writing with the SmartBoard's "pen"/stylus), highlighting parts of the notes, and going through the lesson step by step.  I can later post these files on my website, email them in pdf format to students and forward them to other teachers. Another advantage to having these presentations prepared electronically is that I can print a copy for students to use during class. This is especially useful for students who are visually impaired and have difficulty seeing the board as well as students on IEPs who find listening and taking notes challenging.

This technology makes my lessons more visual than before. Different colors may illustrate different parts of a problem, the highlighter feature highlights in yellow an aspect of a problem solution where I need students to focus, and the screen shade feature allows me to introduce steps one at a time. The document camera allows me to incorporate hard copy into the discussion (text book or student worksheets). I have combined the TI Smartview calculator graphing capabilities with the SmartBoard to instruct students in the use of the calculator's features by pressing the buttons on the display and showing the screens as the calculator works through the function. The SmartBoard also enables me to manage my board work efficiently. After finishing a problem, rather than erasing it, we can return to the problem later. The graphic capabilities make it a very effective tool to illustrate mathematical concepts visually.

Having the computer always connected to the SmartBoard, I am able to display information from web sites, including iPass, the LS Daily Announcements, my own website for each class, wikipedia, news sources, mathematical websites, and the US Census. I have also played students video and audio clips from the internet.

A goal for next year in my own classroom is to get the students to use the SmartBoard more. I would really like to have students learn the features so they can draw diagrams, create graphs, and write out problem solutions on the SmartBoard themselves.
Education Strategies for Parents:
NPR's "Science Friday" features a discussion on Science Education
Keeping our science and math education competitive both nationally and globally a challenge our school district takes very seriously. As parents, we frequently seek opportunities to enrich our children's science knowledge.

On September 25, 2009, NPR's weekly science talk progr
am, Science Friday, featured an interesting discussion on Science Education asking "How can educators make science more relevant, interesting, and teachable in the classroom?" Listen to the podcast of this show online at Science Friday

Of the resources shared, the Global Educational Outreach for Science Engineering and Technology (GEOSET) website offers brief video lessons on many topics in math and science, geared toward students K-12, as well as university level resources. This is a project initiated at Florida State University Check it out at GEOSET.

Science Friday can be heard locally on WBUR 90.9 from 2-4 pm on Fridays.

SERF's Spring College Fair
