Last year I joined The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training.
I set out on a mission to train for an Olympic distance triathlon and
raise $4500 to fund research that will ultimately help stop
leukemia,
lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Every
ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from one of
these cancers. Donations made to LLS fund lifesaving research, education, and patient
services while providing help and hope to thousands.
After exceeding my fundraising goal last September, I completed The Nation's Triathlon in Washington D.C. along with my sister and teammates in honor of individuals
battling blood cancer. It is difficult to find the words to express
the emotional magnitude of this experience. This photo of my sister
and I was taken at the finish line captures a moment that I simply can't describe. We made it through
months of grueling training and our combined fundraising total was over
$10,000. Everyone on the team joined for different reasons and most of
us started out as strangers with different motivation and goals. One of the most extraordinary things about TNT is the
fact that this diverse group became united by a distinct physical, emotional, and symbolic
journey. We shared a commitment to fight a seemingly impossible battle,
we learned to never give up hope, and above all we realized that
with the support of others we can conquer just about anything.
I
want cancer patients and their families to know that my commitment to the cause did not stop at the finish line in Washington D.C. last September. I have joined TNT for another season and have also volunteered to be a Team Mentor. As a Mentor I am providing support to my teammates by helping them reach their personal fundraising goals.
As part of my personal fundraising efforts, I will be donating 15% of all Mushka online sales made from now until race day (May 3rd, 2009) to LLS. Make a purchase, give a gift or treat yourself, and support an important cause all at the same time.
My team and I will be completing the Tri-Miami Olympic Distance Triathlon & Duathlon in Key Biscayne, FL. And guess what... it will not end there! In May I will join the TNT Triathlon Team again as an Assistant Coach. GO TEAM!
