When the City of Kimberley officially opened the doors to the gorgeous state-of-the-art Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre (KCATC) at the base of Kimberley Alpine Resort, it was to a packed house. Among the dignitaries on hand were Schaun Goodeve, the president of the Kimberley & District Chamber of Commerce (MC for the event); Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East; Kimberley mayor Jim Ogilvie; Andy Cohen, the general manager for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies; Greg Deck, vice-chair of Columbia Basin Trust; Cindy Popescul, the director of the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust; Jerry Johnston, a Member of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the International Paralympic Order for 30 years of work in adaptive skiing; and Rick Jensen, founder and chair of New Dawn Developments, the general contractor for the building's construction.

The speakers all paid tribute to the design of the building, which allows maximum accessibility for athletes training at Kimberley Alpine Resort. The interior reflects the mountains that surround it, including wood features, granite columns and soft-as-snow lights in the main foyer. The speakers also commended the private and public organizations that came together to help create the conference centre, with Ogilvie given credit for his tenacity, persistence and vision for Kimberley's future.

The MoMo Mixed Ability Dance Theatre-a Calgary-based troupe of artists with various disabilities-performed two interpretive dance numbers that beautifully illustrated that physical ability is no impairment to creating and reachinggoals.

One of the highlights of the grand opening was speaker Josh Dueck, a Kimberley native who lost the use of his

legs after severing his spine in 2004 in a ski jump gone horribly wrong. Dueck described his life as being turned upside down, but rallied to become a renowned disabled skier and silver medallist in the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Games. Dueck spoke about the importance of being persistent, making the best of every situation and never backing down

La Lune de Chocolat Candy Shoppe

Every child's dream is to visit a real home-made candy store and it must certainly be heaven to own and operate such a business right here in Kimberley.  Steve Moon and his mother Elaine opened La Lune de Chocolat in June of 2005 and it has been their mission to create and provide treats for the most discerning sweet tooth.
Prior to opening their doors, Steve was a harness maker at Ft. Steele who also had a passion for cooking. His big inspiration for chocolate came early as he enjoyed watching "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".  He humbly admits that he has had only some training and is mostly self-taught.
His talents go beyond the sweets - he has hand carved the friendly faced trees that adorn his store and he has true entrepreneurial spirit.
Business has been very good for the Moons and they expanded their Platzl shop to encompass the adjoining unit this past spring.  They needed more space for their ever expanding product line and for their growing client base.  Truffles and hand made caramel confections are their specialty and Steve is always looking for new and delightful offerings.
The secret of their success?  "I'll never stop changing things", says Steve with a grin.
Holiday treats are waiting for you and your family, and don't worry, a few hours at the slopes or on the trails will allow you to enjoy a little indulgence.

WAGE SUBSIDY PROGRAM TO CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER YEAR

CBT's Summer Works program approved for summer 2011

(Columbia Basin) - Columbia Basin students and businesses will be able to access the Summer Works program again in 2011, as the Board of Directors of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has approved the program for another year. In addition, the program's budget will increase to $500,000, from $390,000 in 2010, allowing more students to be hired.

"CBT is committed to strengthening the economic well-being of the Basin, and the Summer Works program helps us do that by giving small businesses a helping hand to hire students," said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. "The 2010 pilot program was a success, providing 112 students with summer jobs, and we look forward to supporting even more students this coming year."

The Summer Works program provides Basin small businesses with wage subsidies to hire high school and post-secondary students, including mature students, enrolled in full-time education. In 2010, the program resulted in 112 summer jobs for students throughout the Basin: half for entry-level positions and half for career-related employment. Of businesses that took advantage of the program, 90 per cent said they plan on applying again, and 99 per cent said they would recommend the program to other businesses.

The program will continue to be administered by College of the Rockies.

"This partnership with CBT worked extremely well for both parties last year," said Tracey Whiting, College of the Rockies Manager of Contract Training and Business Development. "It resulted in a win-win situation for students seeking employment and the businesses that hired them. I'm looking forward to continued success this year."

Information on the application process and timelines will be available in February 2011 at www.cbt.org/summerworks.
