Girl Scouts Rock the Dam!

More than 1,000 Girl Scouts rocked the Hoover Dam Saturday in a bridging ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Girls traded decade inspired Girl Scout S.W.A.P.S. (Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere), ate pancakes, walked the green carpet, and participated in a sing-a-long that included a rousing version of Happy Birthday.

A short ceremony honored the Girl Scouts local past, paying homage to its early beginnings, April 14, 1932, in Boulder City, during the construction of the Hoover Dam. As the girls began

their trek across the Hoover Dam, the crowd came to a fever pitch chanting "Rock the Dam! Rock the Dam!" An aerial photo was taken of the group courtesy of Papillon Helicopters and

photographer Frank Carroll.

Hoover Dam Goes Green for Girl Scouts

In addition to the spectacular event on March 10, the Bureau of Reclamation also agreed to turn the lights of the Dam green for Girl Scout Week March 10 - 17.

On Girl Scouts Anniversary, Monday, March 12, more than 100 girls and their families turned out for the lighting ceremony. At 7:12 p.m. (1912 military time) the crowd sang Happy Birthday to Girl Scouts followed by a 10 second countdown and the Dam was lit green with the Girls Scout logo. The Dam will remained lit green each evening through March 17.

Badges Patches Awards - B

Everyone enjoys learning new skills by earning badges. When you make your own badge, you can decide what you want to learn, either on your own or with your Girl Scout friends.

Once you've picked your topic, complete these four steps:

  • Make your plan.
  • Put your plan into action.
  • Share your new skills with others. (Check out The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting for the requirements for each step.)
  • Then go online to design your actual badge!
At the new Girl Scouts Make Your Own Badge website, you'll find hundreds of shapes, patterns, and colorful symbols to help you design your badge.

Once you're satisfied and ready to purchase your custom badge, you can download a personalized certificate about your badge and a digital copy of your design. You can also save your designs and purchased badges in "My Collection." Your actual badge will arrive in the mail in about two weeks!
