Inspired!
"All you ladies have inspired me. I'm 40 years old and decided that I'm finally taking that plunge to do this alone, after many failed relationships, I've decided that I can always find the love of my life later but I can't have a child later....I've been feeling depressed lately...and wondering if I'm "grieving" about not having a partner to go through all of this with me. I'm in the beginning stages and hopefully will be inseminated next month (if I ovulate)....I'm hopeful. I'm going through a lot of emotions, excitement, sad, scared, etc. But reading all your stories have helped me! Thank you!!! I'll hopefully be posting soon that I'm pregnant!!!"

HPV Screening

What is HPV?  Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted viral disease worldwide.  Some types of the virus cause common skin warts, while other types of HPV are considered high risk (e.g. HPV-16 and HPV-18) and have been associated with anogenital cancer, particularly cervical cancer.

 Fairfax Cryobank has an extensive screening process for donors, including routine HPV tests.  While knowing your donor's medical status is essential, a new study shows that routine OB/GYN exams may overlook important factors that can detect pre-cancer risks in women.

In terms of pre-cancer determination, there are 2 other types of HPV that are not recognized through a routine check-up.  Fairfax Cryobank tests for these 2 HPV strains known to cause cancer, by DNA based testing.  We are the only Sperm Bank that can claim all our donors have had HPV testing by DNA. To learn more about how to monitor your health and HPV, read this informative article.

More is not always better.

by Ileine Sanchez, BS

Laboratory Technician

Conventional wisdom often creates the trap of "more is better" or "bigger is better", but that isn't always the case. Sometimes there is an optimal amount, as is the case of the number of sperm required to achieve pregnancy through insemination.

At Fairfax Cryobank we have a quantitative specimen standard that all  vials (ICI and IUI) will contain a minimum of 10 million Total Motile Cells (TMC) per thawed vial.  We chose to put 10 million TMC per vial after careful consideration of data from laboratories at  the Genetics  &  IVF  Institute , our parent company founded in 1983, and an extensive  literature review.  Several studies demonstrate that when it comes to pregnancy rates, more sperm is not necessarily better.  There is an observed plateau in pregnancy rates once the number of sperm in an insemination dose reaches 10 million. (Van Voorhis et al, 2001) & (Cressman et al, 1996).  What this means is that, all else being equal, increasing sperm numbers beyond 10 million per dose does not have an appreciable impact on pregnancy rates.

We have carefully calculated what we believe to be the optimal number  of sperm contained in a dose of Fairfax Cryobank donor sperm, in order to help you meet your goal of bringing home a healthy happy bundle of joy.

Fairfax Cryobank Family Forums

momandbabiesOur Online Community for Those Using Donor Sperm
Fairfax Cryobank Family Forums allow women and couples who used donor insemination (DI) as well as adults conceived by DI to connect with one another, sharing photos, stories and experiences.  With a registered pregnancy, you can join a donor specific forum and connect with others who used the same donor. When using online organizations outside the sperm bank, clients must trust that those they are connecting with are who they say they are and that donor and offspring information is accurate.  They also may be asked to pay a fee.
You can use the Fairfax Cryobank Family Forums to:
  • help new families navigate telling their children about donor conception by listening and talking with others who have been there;
  • foster an environment of openness;
  • provide an accepting environment for DI conceived individuals,
  • address the unique needs of single women, infertile and single sex couples through shared experiences.

Parenthood Is A Brave Journey

by Dr. Michelle Ottey, Director of Operations
As featured on FertilityAuthority.com

I had a family party this weekend where I was able to spend time with my nieces and nephews. These are great kids that range from 2 to 8 years of age. We talked, played, danced and sang together. They are a lot of fun, but not without challenges. Whenever I spend time with them I gain a greater appreciation for the work, commitment and energy it takes to be a parent.

After five hours I was spent! They are balls of energy, and I will admit that I cannot keep up with them. It was wonderful to see how much my oldest nephew has grown and is starting to mature at the ripe old age of 8. I have seen his entire life and watched as his parents learned to parent him, then learned to parent two kids, then three. I have watched not only these amazing babies turn into interesting kids, but also watched their parents evolve to meet the needs of their kids.

All of this started me thinking about the amazing courage and strength it must take for women and men using donor sperm to begin the process of parenting, which I believe starts the minute you decide to try to have a child.

Those of you who turn to a sperm bank to provide the donor sperm necessary to achieve pregnancy are courageous and amazing.

Using donor sperm adds another dimension to the journey to parenthood. We at the sperm bank have an appreciation for this process and for the emotions wrapped up in the journey. Some sperm banks can appear very product driven, but there are those of us who recognize that your need for donor sperm is part of a bigger picture. That is why we have developed services based on client comments and requests, why we have made the search for a sperm donor more interactive and dynamic. This is also why the staff at the Sperm Bank has a great respect for all of our clients and the individual journey.
