Staff Spotlight
 Cheryl Daubenberger
Director of Client Services

        Ms. Daubenberger has been the Director of Client Services for approximately 4 years.   She says:

"Since we are the first line of communication for our clients and doctor's offices, our job is incredibly important and even though this can be stressful for a client and/or couple, the CS staff is very sensitive and open to the experiences of others."

One aspect of  her job is to provide a service called a Donor Selection Consultation. The purpose of this phone consultation is to provide individualized counseling on the appearance of a list of donors provided by the client.  Lasting approximately 30 minutes, the Donor Selection Consultation was created to answer questions that you might still have after viewing the profiles we offer, such as the exact nose shape or skin tone of a donor, etc.

She says "the most fulfilling part of my job is being able to help a person's dream of parenthood become a reality.  I enjoy working with clients to ensure they are happy and comfortable with the selection process.  The ability to help a deserving person by answering questions, assisting in the donor selection process, or placing an order is incredibly rewarding.  My favorite part about working for Fairfax Cryobank is receiving little notes from clients and pictures of their newborn babies."

Donor Testimonial

 Donor 2967

Participating in the donor program has been a very positive experience, it's a wonderful way to help others.  The staff is excellent, some of the friendliest people I've ever met.  In fact what I like best about participating in the donor program is the friendly staff.
Focus on Health
HPV Screening

Fairfax Cryobank has an extensive screening process for donors, including routine HPV tests.  While knowing your donor's medical status is essential, a new study shows that routine OB/GYN exams may overlook important factors that can detect pre-cancer risks in women.

In terms of pre-cancer determination, there are 2 other types of HPV that are not recognized through a routine check-up.  To learn more about how to monitor your health and HPV, read this

informative article.
Long Term Storage

Fairfax Cryobank offers long term storage of your sperm, embryos, and oocytes, at competitive prices.  If you are interested in transferring your specimens please contact Client Services at 1.800.338.8407 or visit our website for more information.

To Tell or Not To Tell

by Dr. Michelle Ottey, Director of Operations
As featured on FertilityAuthority.com

It is the choice of a child's parents to disclose the details of their conception, as well as to decide the degree of information that is shared. This is an incredibly personal decision.

Since 2004, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Ethics Committee, the national organization representing fertility specialists, has supported full disclosure. I agree with the committee and several other sources that state that disclosure is in the best interest of the child. Secrecy is not healthy and can lead to emotional stress.

Several options for donor selection are available, some for more than 20 years. A prospective parent can choose from:

  • an anonymous sperm donor,
  • an ID consent sperm donor,
  • or a directed (known) donor.

Directed donors, because they are known to the recipient, allow an option for disclosure of the identity of the donor at the discretion of the recipient. The ID donor programs vary by sperm bank, but for the most part this means that upon reaching the age of 18 your prospective child will have the option to obtain contact information for the donor from the sperm bank. This does not guarantee a relationship or sustained contact with the donor, simply that they have agreed to be contacted.

It is important to understand that at most banks you can obtain all of the same detailed information about the anonymous donor, with the only difference being the release of identifying information if you choose an ID donor. This means that regardless of the category of donor you choose, you will have access to the same comprehensive medical history, personal profile, and usually some additional information via interviews or pictures.

An added advantage that using either an anonymous or ID sperm donor allows you is the opportunity to have half siblings connect. The natural curiosity that children have can in many ways be addressed by contact with a half sibling; these siblings discover their shared characteristics and interests that may be similar to the donor. Several sperm banks have developed their own online forums to discuss issues of disclosure, address common concerns and even facilitate these contacts among families that used the same donors.

As the use of donor insemination increases and families are more open there will be increased acceptance. We have already seen a growth in resources for families from the release of children's books to a plethora of websites about and for DI families.

Fairfax Family Forums
momandbabiesOur Online Community for Those Using Donor Sperm
Fairfax Family Forums allow women and couples who used donor insemination (DI) as well as adults conceived by DI to connect with one another, sharing photos, stories and experiences.  With a registered pregnancy, you can join a donor specific forum and connect with others who used the same donor. When using online organizations outside the sperm bank, clients must trust that those they are connecting with are who they say they are and that donor and offspring information is accurate.  They also may be asked to pay a fee.
 "As the sperm bank with access to our own client and donor records, we are able to verify information, be selective in those we grant access to in the private donor forums and also make sure donor personal and medical information is correct while protecting anonymity of all parties involved at no cost to our clients," says Dr. Michelle Ottey, director of operations for Fairfax Cryobank.
You can use the Fairfax Family Forums to:
  • help new families navigate telling their children about donor conception by listening and talking with others who have been there;
  • foster an environment of openness;
  • provide an accepting environment for DI conceived individuals,
  • address the unique needs of single women, infertile and single sex couples through shared experiences.
"Fairfax Cryobank is excited to offer this service for our clients.  We recognize the importance of open communication, sharing of health and medical information, and the positive relationships that can develop from these connections.  It is for those reasons that we created the Fairfax Family Forums.  The best place to share and gather information is at the source," says Dr. Ottey.
