11 Keys to FITness Success

FITniche has spent years watching and analyzing people who consistently enjoy and stick with their running, walking and fitness activities.  We've noticed that most of these successful people practice the following 11 habits to varying degrees, and we think you should too! Each publication, we'll focus on at least one key habit (this issue's are highlighted below).  So read on...then get out there, get fit, and have fun!
  1. Work out with friends.
  2. Set goals and seek adventure.
  3. Find fluidity and grace.
  4. Work out for others.
  5. Do what you enjoy.
  6. Embrace some suffering.
  7. Do important things first.
  8. Fall off the wagon.
  9. Keep it simple.
  10. Find balance.
  11. Have fun!

Hello!

GIVING:  When was the last time you really gave of yourself to help someone less fortunate than you? The power of giving truly is immense. It fulfills a core human need in most of us, and often results in the favor being repaid back to you in spades in some way, somehow.  It's very cool the way this "return on giving" seems to work.

At FITniche we try to give back in a number of ways with your help--whether you know it or not. I say with your help, because your patronage at our stores is really what allows us to help support the greater communities in which we operate. We donate your old shoes to local homeless shelters, so bring 'em in next time you're by.  We donate returned shoes to Special Olympics Athletes. (Read the article below.) And we support almost all of the major charitable athletic groups like TNT and the 3-Day walk by letting them use our stores for meetings and giving them discounts on products when needed.  We also try to give y
ou price breaks just for being return shoppers with us (no club to pay for, just discounts on key products when you return for your next purchase--very simple). More importantly, we always want to give you the knowledge and inspiration you Richneed to accomplish your goals in as healthy a way as possible.  And we give to community efforts like the construction of restroom facilities at Lakeland's Lake Hollingsworth walking path.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping us do all this giving.

Yours in FITness and in Health,
Rich and the Crew at FITniche

We Gave Your Shoes to

Ever wonder where shoes that get returned go? The answer: a very special place.  Last Friday and Saturday, FITniche donated over 200 pairs of barely worn, returned performance running shoes to Special Olympics Athletes at the State Track & Field Championships  in Orlando, FL.  The combined value of these shoes was close to $24,000.  FITniche supplied the personel to fit these most-special athletes, while our vendor partners helped offset most of the cost of the shoes. Asics, Brooks, Saucony, New Balance, Nike & Mizuno all pitched in!

Several years ago FITniche recognized a need for better footwear on local Special Olympics athletes. These athletes, some of our most vulnerable citizens, often have extremely limited financial resources for provision of even basic services, like life-skills training, prescription medicines and basic medical check-ups. Most certainly don't have the budget for performance running shoes.

FITniche saw an opportunity to provide shoes for athletes with

the shoes you, our customers, sometimes return. Most returned shoes usually have little to no discernible wear and tear and little wrong with the shoe, so they can no longer be sold as new product to other customers.  Historically, FITniche simply ate the costs of returned shoes or petitioned  shoe manufacturers for what usually amounted to partial credit.  Manufacturers also usually required return of the shoes to them for inspection before granting credit.  This process cost FITniche and the manufacturers additional money and time handling and shipping the product.  We asked, "Why not just tell the manufacturers which shoes had been returned and then give the shoes to Special Olympics athletes?"

Manufacturers responded favorably to the idea, and a win-win-win was created.  Athletes were fitted by FITniche volunteers with free performance running shoes.  Manufacturers didn't have to handle product once it was shipped back to them.  And FITniche received credit back from manufacturers for donated product.

FITniche is now working with Special Olympics state and national officials to expand the program to more athletes and other retailers.  The goal is to build this into a national program servicing thousands of Special Olympics athletes across the country and even the globe!

Minmalist Shoes: The Simple Truth

Simpler really can be better sometimes.  Surely

you've seen or read about the rise of the seemingly very simple minimalist shoes like Vibrams, Newtons, Nike Free and others.  They're the fastest growing category of shoes in all three of our stores and show no signs of letting up.  So many of you are adopting the shoes (or at least talking about them), and so much information  is swirling around out there (some of it dangerous), that we thought it important to share some key  pros, cons and best practices for using this type of product.

Definition
Minimalist shoes eliminate much of the weight and most of the structure, as well as the downhill slope from heel to forefoot in shoes. Traditional shoes usually have a 10-14% downhill pitch from the heel.  Minimalist shoes usually have a 0-4% pitch from the heel.

Minimalist Pros
  • Makes it likely you'll land closer to midfoot, or at least less heavily on your heels.
  • The more impact force the midfoot absorbs, the more lightly your overall strike--usually!
  • Minimalist shoes are also lighter, and that means you'll usually run faster. (Shaving ounces in a shoe is equivalent to losing pounds from your torso!)
  • You'll also use more of the foot's smaller muscle structures, theoretically making you stronger and less injury prone.
Minimalist Cons
  • You'll need more elasticity in your calf and achilles to handle the close-to-flat heels, so it's important to gradually work them in to your training.
  • Many of the shoes have no cushioning.  Most have very little structure.  So form and technique are critical to ensure your long-term health. More on that below.
  • Because of the lack of cushioning and structure, you'll need to stay more focused on your form and technique.
  • Running on engineered surfaces (uniformly hard, flat surfaces like sidewalks and paved roads) should be done with more engineered (traditional) shoes. The bare foot works best on natural surfaces where every footstep is a little different from the one before it and the ground is softer.  Running on uniformly hard, flat surfaces where every footstep is just like the one before it requires more structure and cushion in a shoe to protect you from overuse-type injuries. Fat pads in the foot break down faster, stress fractures are more likely, and weak infrastructure links can occur more readily be found over time when running in extreme minimalist product on roads and sidewalks.
Best Practices!
  1. Gradually get your body used to running in minimalist product.  Start with 5 minutes and add just a couple of minutes more each time out--until you get to a total of 30 minutes.
  2. Wear extreme minimalist shoes on natural surfaces only!  if you don't have access to a trail, run in the grass beside the sidewalk or road. It's more fun there anyway!
  3. When you want to put the earphones in and turn your brain off, wear traditional shoes. Traditional shoes stabilize the foot extremely effectively when fitted correctly.
  4. When you want to be fully engaged with your environment and focused on your form and technique, wear minimalist shoes, which will strengthen your infrastructure and help make better form more likely.
  5. Keep both types of shoes in your arsenal.
  6. Use minimalistic shoes to enjoy running lighter, faster, and with better form!
  7. Let trained professionals (us!) help you select the right minimalist product for your training needs, body type and biomechanics!

Love to Run Here, Love to Save Here!

Sure, you want to buy local. You intuitively understand that for every $100 spent in an independentlyblue dollar sign owned running store, $68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.  But you also want to save some dough for yourself, and you definitely don't want to have to "buy" a "club membership" to get the better prices and treatment.  That just doesn't make sense.

So over the years, we've come up with FITniche SAVES for your core needs.

1.     Shoes: Come back within 8 months of your last shoe purchase and get 10% off your next pair, plus a 20% off apparel coupon!

2.     Sports Bras: Ladies, come back within 12 months of your last bra purchase and get 10% your next bra, plus a 20% off apparel coupon!

3.     Socks: Buy any 3 or more pair of socks and take a dollar off each!

4.     Nutrition Products: Buy a box worth of any nutritional product and take 15% of the price! (Feel free to mix and match flavors!)

5.     Facebook and Pub Run Specials: Friend us on Facebook or join us at our pub runs, where we periodically make special offers available to the friends of FITniche just because....

So stay local, save some dough for yourself, and don't "buy" into a "club" for the privilege to pay for better prices and make easier returns.  Shop with us at FITniche, where friends take care of friends.  :)

LOVE,

FITniche
