Greetings!
There's a new movement afoot in the running and walking community. It's called "Natural" or "Minimalist" running and walking, and it can help you run or walk faster, more efficiently and with less pain. Spend a few minutes reading about correct running and walking form below, or, better yet, join us at one of our Natural Running Clinics in the near future.
Also, check the bottom of this email to find out how we're resurrecting the old 6-month Shoe Program; it helps you remember when to replace your shoes, and it also helps you save money on your next shoe purchase.
Finally, up to 50 of you at a time have been participating in our Red Door Fun Runs on Tuesday evenings, and we're changing the start time to 6:30 PM so more of you can participate. Hope to see you at The Red Door one of these evenings!
May your best miles lie ahead of you, and may they all be traveled on foot! Sincerely, Rich and the Crew at FITniche

Oooowe, Oooowe that Smell..... And speaking of smell, did you know that using Stuff-its in your shoes not only fights off shoe funk with its cedar scent, it can add up to 20% more longevity to the lifespan of your shoes! Moisture breaks down EVA, and EVA is the material your shoe's midsole is made of. The longer you shoes hold moisture, the quicker that soft midsole material firms up and eventually becomes brick-like. So dry your shoes fast...with Stuffits!

Natural Running and Walking
A BETTER WAY TO RUN AND WALK! Running (and even walking) correctly and
efficiently, it turns out, involves more than just putting one foot in front of
the other. It requires technique, and "Natural" running and walking is a collection of decades-old
technique practices that put yourbody back in synch with the way it was originally designed to move through this world. It makes running less
stressful and more enjoyable by taking advantage your body's natural bio-mechanical
strengths.
NATURAL RUNNING TECHNIQUE Plan to practice the
techniques described below just a handful of minutes at first. Then gradually
add more of it to your every-day workouts.
Practicing in bare feet or Natural Motion shoes like Vibrams or Newtons is ideal, but
you can perfect your form in any pair of shoes.
- Proper upper body posture is critical. Maintain a straight, chest-open
upper body. Eyes should look toward the horizon, and you should lean slightly forward (from the
ankles-not the hips). Imagine a straight line running from your ear,
through your hips, ankle and foot as it is planted on the ground.
- Be sure legs and arms swing only in the
plane of direction you are trying to run. Thumbs should pass just at the top of your hips. In other words, don't swing side
to side or cross in front of your chest.
- Maintain a cadence of 80-90 RPM's per leg, no
matter how fast or slow you are trying to run. (Count how many times one
foot lands over a 20 second period of time. Anything close to 30 is ideal.) This will leave you with a
shorter, lighter, quicker stride, with each footstep landing squarely
under your center of gravity. This cadence will also make it almost
impossible to over-stride and will make it likely that your foot lands in
a more "full" foot or forefoot position.
- As each foot makes contact with the ground, focus on geting that foot right back up and behind you, letting gravity pull you forward, rather than trying to "propel" yourself forward. To speed up, lean slightly further forward from the ankles. To speed up a lot, push off from the big toe and lengthen your stride from behind. To ease up on your pace, lean a little less forward. Maintain your 80-90 RPM stride rate at all paces.
NATURAL RUNNING CLINICS Join us a half-hour prior to every pub run for a free Natural Running Clinic. Clinics will begin at 6:00 PM in The Red Door parking lot.

6-Month Shoe Program Some of you may remember the 6-month shoe replacement program that we used operate. When your shoes were 6-months old, we emailed you to let you know. If you came back in that month for your next pair, we gave you a discount. Well....the program is back by popular demand!
Look for an email once your shoes are 6-months old. Come in for any replacement pair before they're 8-months old, and we'll give you 10% off the replacement pair! Thanks to those of you who provided feedback on this one! We are listening!
