How could he reconcile the command "offer him as a burnt offering" with the promise "in Isaac shall thy seed be called"? It was his trial by fire, but he did not fail in the crucible ...God let him go through with it up to the point of no retreat, and then said, in effect, "...I wanted to remove him from the temple of your heart that I might reign unchallenged there. I wanted to correct the perversion that existed in your love." Now he was a man wholly surrendered, a man utterly obedient....

God's Great Plan and... Huh? (Part 2)
Genesis 22:1-14

One of the most recognizable stories of the Old Testament is Abraham taking his son Isaac up to the mountain as a sacrifice to God-on God's own instructions. It has to challenge your sensibilities and throw you off kilter a little bit. It certainly did this for Abraham. But without these kinds of challenging stories, we might find the Bible (and God, for that matter) to match up so squarely with our tastes that he ends up being no different than our reflection in the mirror. Probing this story for new information about God is important in admitting that if God exists, he must be wholly other, and will often surprise us if we come to actually know him.

City Life Church hopes you and your friends will get to know God better through our worship services, community pods, message podcasts, social events and work in serving various needs in the midtown community. Visit any time you want, knowing that it is a safe community for exploration of your relationship to God.
