Glimmer of hope on state aid to libraries
Update on Perfect Storm of Library Cuts: the outcome may be less severe than it looked at first.

  • Tuesday, April 19 the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee voted to "hold library funding harmless" at $7,247,300 million. In two separate bills (SB 174 and SB 183) state aid to libraries was funded at $ 3,640,000 million and the school aid fund included $3,607,300 for libraries. This holds library funding at last year's level.
  • April 13 the House Education Appropriations Subcommittee adopted their budget which mirrored the Governor's budget regarding library funding. State aid to libraries was reduced to $3,445,000 and a new line item was added for the Michigan eLibrary at $950,000.
  • Next steps: Senate Appropriations will vote out their budget bills Wednesday, April 20. The House Appropriations Committee is expected to vote out their budget bills by next week. Bills will be sent to Conference Committee to work out differences.
As updates are available they will be posted to the Library's website. In the meantime I continue to urge you to let our legislators know what you value about library service in our community.

Reading kids

Libraries are starting places for the adventure of learning that can go on whatever one's vocation and location in life. Reading is an adventure like that of discovery itself. Libraries are our base camp.
