Leggett Branch to close November 5, 2010
Due to budget constraints the Leggett Branch will close permanently at the end of the business day on Friday, November 5, 2010. The branch collection will be incorporated into Main's collection. While we regret this necessity be assured that hours at the Main Library in the Civic Center will remain the same.

  • Monday-Thursday, 9:00a-9:00p
  • Friday, 9:00a-5:00p
  • Saturday, 10:00a-5:00p
  • Sunday, 1:00p-5:00p

Used Book Sale
The Friends of the Library are holding a 3-day book sale. In the Community Room at the Main library.

  • Thursday, NOV 4, 4:00p-8:00p
  • Friday, NOV 5, 9:00a-4:00p
  • Saturday, NOV 6, 10:00a-3:00p. Bag sale from 1:00p-3:00p, $4/bag.

Friends of the Library Used Book Drop-off Day
The Friends of the Library will hold a used book donation drop-off day Saturday, NOV 13th. Items can be dropped off in the Library's Community Room between 10:00a and 1:00p. Please note: There is a five box (or bag) limit. Call Lori Hosler at 248-674-7098 if your donation will exceed the limit.
Items that are not accepted are:

  • Encyclopedias over 10 years old
  • Reader's Digest Condensed books
  • Magazines
  • Vinyl Records
  • College Textbooks
  • Musty/Moldy items

Talk Time hosts needed
Talk Time, our ESL conversation group, meets Thursday mornings from 9:30a-11:00a in the Group Study Room at Main. Description and contact information are below under Outreach Programs. To volunteer to serve as a host just download and complete a Volunteer Information form available on our website.

Fall Storytimes for Children ages 0-5
Session II - Begins the week of October 19-21 and ends the week of November 16-18
Storytimes are offered on a drop-in basis. No registration required.
** Babytime (ages 6 mos.- 15 mos.)
Tuesdays - 10:00a-10:30a
First Babytime is Tuesday is October 19

** Toddlertime (ages 16 mos. to 23 mos.)
Wednesdays - 10:00a -10:30a
First Toddlertime is Wednesday is October 20

** Two-Year-Old Storytime
Tuesdays - 11:00a-11:30m
First Two-year-old storytime, Tuesday is October 19

** Three-Year-Old Storytime
Wednesdays - 11:00a -11:30m
First Three-year-old storytime is Wednesday, October 20

** Preschool Story and Craft Time (ages 4-5)
Thursday mornings - 10:00a -10:45a
First Preschool Storytime is Thursday, October 21

Lego Club
Students meet about once a month to create their own Lego structure. They will be displayed in the library until the next meeting. Then the students can make new structures. We have two class times in the morning for each day. Please sign up for one of the times:

  • 10:15a - 11:00a, OR
  • 11:30a -12:15p
You can register for the sessions starting two weeks in advance.

Friendship
Wednesday, November 10 - 5:00p - 5:45p
Ages 3-5

A **We the People** Program. We'll be reading Tico and Golden Wings by Leo Leonni and other stories to explore the meaning of friendship and celebrate the qualities that make us unique, but also, the things that we have in common. We will make a friendship wreath.

A More Perfect Union
Thursday, November 18 - 5:00p -6:00p
Ages 6-8

A **We the People** Program. Featuring the book When Marian Sang, we will learn about the people in American history who broke through barriers to bring our country closer to the ideals established in the U.S. Constitution. Students will watch a presentation and make a historical collage of famous Americans.
Registration begins Wednesday, November 10. NOTE: We are closed Thursday, November 11, for Veterans Day.

Perfect Union of Voices
Saturday, November 13 - 10:30a - 11:30a
Ages 9-12

A **We the People** Program. The librarian and the students will get to do dramatic readings that emphasize the plurality of our American Culture by using the books Cesar: Si, Se Puede, Carver: A Life in Poems, and Lincoln: In His Own Words. Students will also get to hear a recording of Marian Anderson.

Sheryl E. Krasnow, from College and Career Counseling Associates, advises parents and students on the ins and outs of financial aid including definitions, college costs, and how the financial aid package is determined.

Waterford Author Presents...
Tuesday, November 16, @ 7:00p
Waterford author Jack Mason will discuss his recently published Civil War book Until Antietam: The Life and Letters of Major General Israel B. Richardson, US Army. Mr. Mason based his writing on the more than 100 unpublished letters General Richardson had written to his family during his 20 year military career from his time as a West Point cadet until the day before his fatal wounding at the Battle of Antietam.

Fall Fest
Wednesday, November 17th, @7 pm
We'll have plenty of food, music and games of all kinds with prizes and giveaways! Limited to 30 people so register NOW!

Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War"
Saturdays October 16, 23, 30, and November 20, 27 at 2p
For you history buffs, the final 2 sessions of these afternoon screenings of episodes of the award-winning documentary series by Ken Burns in order (1-2 episodes per Saturday) in the Community Room.

Book Discussion Groups
The Adults' Services Department has two Book Discussion Groups - a Monday afternoon group and a Tuesday evening group. Join us for great reads and stimulating discussions.

Talk Time
Thursday mornings, 9:30a-11:00a
If English is your second language, please join us in an informal, friendly setting. We practice our conversation skills when we talk in small groups about selected topics, play games, use prepared dialogs. For those who would like to practice speaking in English and practice listening in English.
The group meets on a drop-in basis every Thursday morning in the Group Study Room at the Main Library. No registration is required.

Outreach Book Club
The Outreach Book Club meets at the Main library the last Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm. Meetings will be held in the Conference Room.

The Waterford Library is proud to offer you best-selling and classic audiobooks, eBooks, and music available 24/7 from the library's website starting August 2nd.

You can browse the collection, check out with your library card, and download to PC, Mac�, and many mobile devices. To get started, you will need to install free software. For audiobooks and music: OverDrive� Media Console. To read eBooks, you'll need Adobe� Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod�, Sony� Reader, and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!

Book Memorials & Donations

Book memorials are a meaningful way of remembering a person, a group, an occasion or a milestone.
Donations are used to purchase books and other materials or deposited in the Library's donations account for future use.

Checks should be make payable to the Waterford Township Public Library and will be accepted by the Director. NOTE: A partial income tax credit is allowed when you donate to a qualifying Michigan public institution such as the Waterford Township Public Library.

Friends' Fundraising Projects
There are a number of fundraising projects sponsored by the Friends of the Library beyond the Used Book Sales. Other projects are

  • VG's Community Share program: turn in your register receipts so that they can be turned into cash
  • Canvas Book Bags for sale at the Circulation Desk at Main, featuring a drawing of the Main Library
  • Royal Oak Recycling - White Lake location, 10320 Highland Road. Drop off recyclables and instead of receiving cash designate the Friends of the Waterford Library as recipient.
