The libraries will be closed for the Columbus Day holiday

Leggett Branch to close November 5, 2010
Due to budget constraints the Leggett Branch will close permanently at the end of the business day on Friday, November 5, 2010. The branch collection will be incorporated into Main's collection. While we regret this necessity be assured that hours at the Main Library in the Civic Center will remain the same.

Used Book Sale
The Friends of the Library are holding a 1-day book sale

  • Saturday, October 2, 10:00a - 3:00p.
In the Community Room at the Main library.

CANCELLED - Friends of the Library Used Book Drop-off Day
The Friends of the Library will NOT hold a used book donation drop-off day Saturday, OCT 9th. Their storage space is too full at present. The next scheduled drop-off day will be Saturday, NOV 13th.

Talk Time hosts needed

Talk Time, our ESL conversation group, meets Thursday mornings from 9:30a- 11:00a in the Group Study Room at Main. Description and contact information are below under Outreach Programs. To volunteer to serve as a host just download and complete a Volunteer Information form available on our website.

Fall Storytimes for Children ages 0-5
Session II - Begins the week of October 19-21 and ends the week of November 16-18
Storytimes are offered on a drop-in basis. No registration required.
** Babytime (ages 6 mos.- 15 mos.)
Tuesdays - 10:00-10:30 am
First Babytime is Tuesday is October 19

** Toddlertime (ages 16 mos. to 23 mos.)
Wednesdays - 10:00-10: 30 am
First Toddlertime is Wednesday is October 20

** Two-Year-Old Storytime
Tuesdays - 11:00-11:30 am
First Two-year-old storytime, Tuesday is October 19

** Three-Year-Old Storytime
Wednesdays - 11:00-11:30 am

** Preschool Story and Craft Time (ages 4-5)
Thursday mornings - 10:00-10:45 am

Lego Club
Students meet about once a month to create their own Lego structure. They will be displayed in the library until the next meeting. Then the students can make new structures. We have two class times in the morning for each day. Please sign up for one of the times:

  • 10:15a - 11:00a, OR
  • 11:30a -12:15p
You can register for the sessions starting two weeks in advance.

Bats of the World
Thursday, October 7 - 7:00-8:00 pm.
Family program for ages 5 and older

The Organization for Bat Conservation from the Cranbrook Institute of Science's Bat Zone will give a multi-media presentation about bats and their part in the world's ecosystem, food web, and habitat. Five different live bats will be visiting us.

Extraordinary Elephants
Wednesday, October 13 - 5:00-5:45 pm.
Ages 3-5

Do elephants never forget? Do they love peanuts? Enjoy exciting stories, songs and activities having to do with Pachyderms.

Harvest Time
Monday, October 4 - 5:00-6:00 pm
Ages 6-8

Fall is time to celebrate the harvest! Come and enjoy stories about autumn, make a cute and festive corn collage to display, and share a glass of apple cider.

Trick or Read
Tuesday, October 26 - 5:00-6:00 pm
Ages 6-8

Halloween is almost here. Have fun with spooky stories, creepy crafts and a ghoulish game.

Beginning Origami
Wednesday, October 20 - 5:00-6:00 pm
Ages 9-12

Fun with folding! A beginner's lesson in the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding. We'll supply the paper for students to make several projects to take home.

This workshop will provide information on how to take preventive measures to ensure your computer works as efficiently as possible. We will also discuss basic troubleshooting techniques. Presented by John Keck.

Johnny Blast of Hopman's Beer and Wine Making Supply in Waterford will talk about how to make homemade beer using time-tested techniques and equipment.

GHOSM-Ghost Hunters of Southern Michigan

"If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?" GHOSM will return to the Library to share their fascinating experiences with haunted houses, cemeteries, restaurants and local businesses.
This program is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War"
Saturdays October 16, 23, 30, and November 20, 27 at 2p
For you history buffs, we will show all the episodes of this award-winning documentary series by Ken Burns in order (1-2 episodes per Saturday) in the Community Room.

The Adults' Services Department has two Book Discussion Groups - a Monday afternoon group and a Tuesday evening group. Join us for great reads and stimulating discussions.

Talk Time
Thursday mornings, 9:30a-11:00a
If English is your second language, please join us in an informal, friendly setting. We practice our conversation skills when we talk in small groups about selected topics, play games, use prepared dialogs. For those who would like to practice speaking in English and practice listening in English.
The group meets on a drop-in basis every Thursday morning in the Group Study Room at the Main Library. No registration is required.

Outreach Book Club
The Outreach Book Club meets at the Main library the last Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm. Meetings will be held in the Conference Room.

The Waterford Library is proud to offer you best-selling and classic audiobooks, eBooks, and music available 24/7 from the library's website starting August 2nd.

You can browse the collection, check out with your library card, and download to PC, Mac�, and many mobile devices. To get started, you will need to install free software. For audiobooks and music: OverDrive� Media Console. To read eBooks, you'll need Adobe� Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod�, Sony� Reader, and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!

Book Memorials & Donations

Book memorials are a meaningful way of remembering a person, a group, an occasion or a milestone.
Donations are used to purchase books and other materials or deposited in the Library's donations account for future use.

Checks should be make payable to the Waterford Township Public Library and will be accepted by the Director. NOTE: A partial income tax credit is allowed when you donate to a qualifying Michigan public institution such as the Waterford Township Public Library.

Friends' Fundraising Projects
There are a number of fundraising projects sponsored by the Friends of the Library beyond the Used Book Sales. Other projects are

  • VG's Community Share program: turn in your register receipts so that they can be turned into cash
  • Canvas Book Bags for sale at the Circulation Desk at Main, featuring a drawing of the Main Library
  • Royal Oak Recycling - White Lake location, 10320 Highland Road. Drop off recyclables and instead of receiving cash designate the Friends of the Waterford Library as recipient.
