National Library Week

Amnesty Week - April 11th-17th
During National Library Week this year we're hoping to see some long-lost items find their way back home. Fines will be forgiven for any Waterford library materials returned during this week. Does NOT include items:

  • damaged or incomplete
  • lost and not returned
  • previously returned for which fines are still outstanding
  • owned by other libraries
  • returned before April 11th
  • returned after April 17th

Friends of the Library Used Book Drop-off Day
The Friends of the Library will be accepting donations for future Used Book Sales on Saturday, April 10th. Items can be dropped off in the Main Library's Community Room between 10:00a and 1:00p.
Please note: There is a five box (or bag) limit. Call Lori Hosler at 248-674-7098 if you exceed the limit.

Items that are not accepted are:

  • Encyclopedias over 10 years old
  • Reader's Digest Condensed books
  • Magazines
  • Vinyl Records
  • College Textbooks
  • Musty/Moldy items
  • Census Forms for non-English Speakers
    Census forms for speakers of the following languages are available in the circulation lobby at the Main Library. The forms are located on the shelving to the left of the Adults' NEW titles along with a poster with a contact phone number to call census workers.

    • Russian

    Friends of the Library Used Book Sale
    The Friends of the Library will hold a 3-day sale at the Main Library in the Community Room.

    • Thursday, April 15th from 4:00p-8:00p
    • Friday, April 16th from 9:00a-4:00p
    • Saturday, April 17th from 10:00a-3:00p. The Bag Sale runs from 1:00p-3:00p ($4/bag).

    Genealogy Lock-In 2010
    Friday, April 30th @ 5:45p-11:45p
    Don't miss this opportunity to find your ancestors and meet other ancestor hunters. Enjoy an entire evening of research, learning, food and camaraderie. Details on cost and registration in a flyer on the library's website.

    **Children's Programs**

    Storytimes - Session III
    Our third session of drop-in story times begins the week of April 13th and ends the week of April 27th. Registration is not required.

    Storytimes for children 3 years of age and younger are 30 minutes long and include stories, songs, fingerplays, etc.

    Preschool storytimes for children ages 4-5 include a craft and are 45 minutes long.

    Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. We ask that parents and caregivers arrive at least 5 minutes before story time begins in order to pick up nametags and get settled.

    • Babytime (ages 6 mos.-15 mos.): Tuesdays, 10:00a-10:30a, begins April 13th
    • Toddlertime (ages 16 mos.-23 mos.): Wednesdays, 10:00a-10:30a, begins April 14th
    • 2-year-old Storytime: Tuesdays, 11:00a-11:30a, begins April 13th
    • 3-year-old Storytime: Wednesdays, 11:00a-11:30a, begins April 14th
    • Preschool Story & Craft Time (ages 4-5): Thursdays, 10:00a-10:45a, begins 15th
    • Leggett Preschool Story & Craft Time (ages 4-5): Thursdays, 1:30p-2:15p, begins April 15th
    Lego Club
    Recommended for ages 5 and up. Meets once a month for children to create their own Lego structure. These will be displayed in the library until the next meeting. Then the children can make new structures. We have two class times in the morning for each meeting day. Please sign up for one of the times. You can register for the sessions starting two weeks in advance.

    Matinee Movies
    Join us for a movie in the Library's Community Room beginning at 1:30 p.m.
    • Monday, April 5th
    • Thursday, April 8th
    • Friday, April 9th
    Children under 9 need to be accompanied by an adult. We will provide some popcorn. Attendees are welcome to bring pillows, blankets, snacks and bottled water. Just don't bring any peanuts, juice or pop, please! The chairs are kind of hard, so don't be embarrassed to bring a pillow to sit on. No registration required. Just come and enjoy a great movie on the big screen with no commercials. Call the Children's Department at (248) 618-7692 for titles.

    African Safari
    Ages 3-5. Saturday, April 10th, 10:30a- 11:15a
    Stories about the animals and people who live in Africa. We'll be making a paper animal of the Serengeti.
    Registration begins Thursday, April 1st

    It's Raining Cats & Dogs!
    Ages 6-8. Tuesday, April 6th, 10:00a-11:00a
    It's spring break week! April is traditionally a time for showers, but this is a weird one! Cat and dog stories and crafts are the theme of the day.
    Registration begins Tuesday, March 20th

    Earth Day Everyday
    Ages 6-8. Saturday, April 24th, 10:30a-11:30a
    Learn how important it is to reuse your glass and plastic "trash". You will also be making your own glass animal buddy jars.
    Registration begins Saturday, April 17th

    READ Club: Book v. Movie
    Ages 9-12. Wednesday, April 7th, 1:00p-3:30p
    We will be reading Roald Dahl's The Witches, and then watch the movie. Book discussion and pizza at 1:00 pm, movie at 1:30 pm, and then compare the two after the viewing. This program is held spring break week.
    Registration begins Wednesday, March 24th. Pick up the book at registration.

    Spring Garden
    Ages 9-12. Tuesday, April 27th, 5:00p-6:00p
    Spring is in the air and that means pretty flowers will soon be blooming. Come on in and learn how to make paper posy baskets to hold those beautiful blossoms
    Registration begins Tuesday, April 20th.

    Celebrate National Poetry Month by participating in a poetry writing workshop facilitated by local poet and teacher Margo LaGattuta. Bring a poem that you have been working on. Learn techniques to jumpstart your writing. Be ready to explore your creativity. Refreshments provided.

    Applause: An Open Mic Reading
    Tuesday, April 27th @ 6:30p
    Have you ever wanted to read your poetry in front of an audience? Come to our open mic reading to celebrate National Poetry Month! Local poet Marsha Jean Carter will start and end the program by reading her poetry accompanied by keyboard and drums. Participants will read their poetry between Marsha's sets. Refreshments provided.

    The Adults' Services Department has two Book Discussion Groups - a Monday afternoon group and a Tuesday evening group. Join us for great reads and stimulating discussions.

    **Outreach Programs**

    ESL Conversation Group for new English- speakers
    Thursday, April 1st, 10:00a-11:00a
    All people learning English as a second language (ESL) - or third or fourth language - are invited to come practice their English in a relaxed setting with our new ESL Conversation Group.
    The group will meet on a drop-in basis the first Thursday of the month in the Group Study Room at the Main Library. The host at each meeting will introduce the topic for that session, e.g. shopping, talking on the phone, doing errands, and begin the conversation about it. No registration is required.

    Outreach Book Club
    The Outreach Book Club meets at the Main library the last Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm. Meetings will be held in the Conference Room.

    Homebound Delivery
    Waterford residents who are homebound either temporarily or indefinitely can arrange for home delivery of library materials. These include books in regular or large print and audio books. To arrange for thise service please call Nancy McDonald, 248.618.7688

    The Leggett Book Club meets at the Leggett Campus the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm. Meetings will be held in Activity Room #1.

    Mango Languages

    NEW AT THE LIBRARY

    The Mango Language Learning Program is now available through the Library's online databases. Mango provides the following 22 languages and 14 additional ESL programs:

    • Spanish, Italian, French, German, Irish
    • Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese
    • Greek, Russian
    • Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew
    • Brazilian Portuguese
    • Thai, Tagalog
    • Hindi, Dari
    • Pashto, Urdu, and Turkish
    Log on to Mango through our online databases 24/7. It can be accessed from anywhere using the web through the Library's website.

    Steps to access on a computer at the Library
    1. Access the Library's Website
    2. Select Research tab at the top of the screen
    3. Select Search Online Databases from the drop- down menu or page
    4. Select Mango Languages from the Alphabetical List of Databases on the upper left
    5. Start Learning
    Steps to access from a remote location, e.g. home

    Book Memorials & Donations

    Book memorials are a meaningful way of remembering a person, a group, an occasion or a milestone.
    Donations are used to purchase books and other materials or deposited in the Library's donations account for future use.

    Checks should be make payable to the Waterford Township Public Library and will be accepted by the Director. Donations recently made to the Library:

    • Bill Schmidt, supporting the collection
    NOTE: A partial income tax credit is allowed when you donate to a qualifying Michigan public institution such as the Waterford Township Public Library.

    Friends' Fundraising Projects
    There are a number of fundraising projects sponsored by the Friends of the Library beyond the Used Book Sales. Other projects are

    • VG's Community Share program: turn in your register receipts so that they can be turned into cash
    • Kroger's Community Rewards program: register your Kroger Plus Card online designating the Waterford Friends of the Library as recipient and every time your card is used points are added to the Friends points total. Each quarter a check is sent to the organization for points earned.
    • Canvas Book Bags for sale at the Circulation Desk at Main, featuring a drawing of the Main Library
