Contextual Education is an integral aspect of formation for ministry at Saint Paul. Students are challenged to experience new contexts for ministry and process what they are learning together. They ask what is going on in different situations and where God is at work in the process. Students also employ particular methods for understanding their own ministry settings more deeply so that in the present and in the future they can be in ministry in faithful and effective ways.

Dr. Jim Brandt, Director of Contextual Education, together with staff members Anita Chancey and Rick Burns, launched a revised contextual education program this fall. It demonstrates the practicality of our degree programs.

Contextual Education at Saint Paul
Dynamic Congregation By Dr. James M Brandt, Director of Contextual Education

Several years ago a student in Contextual Education class was puzzled about a weekly practice in the congregation he was serving. At the conclusion of worship, the congregation made a big circle in the sanctuary, held hands, and prayed for each other and for the congregation. The student was concerned about this practice because it was so inwardly directed with the people praying only for each other. In interviewing a member about the prayer circle at the close of worship, the student discovered that several years before the congregation had been in crisis and on the verge of closing. The inward directed practice of prayer had developed as a way for the members to say to each other: I'm here for you, I care about you, and I'll be back next week. The practice embodied the people's commitment to stay together. The student came away with a new appreciation for the practice.

Students talkIn Contextual Ed courses students reflect together on what they are experiencing in seminary and in ministry. Preparing for Local Ministries (Plum), a two-semester class for first year MDiv students, brings together six students and an experienced practitioner of ministry. Together they reflect on matters of spirituality and vocation, the practice of ministry, and what they are learning. Some students have said that Plum is crucial for surviving and thriving in their first year of seminary.

Ministry in Context is an upper level course which introduces students to the methods and tools of congregational studies so that they can understand communities and congregations more deeply. In this course, students go out into the communities around our KC and OKC campuses and learn about an agency or congregation and its mission and ministry. Students also learn more about their own ministry settings.

Student visits elderlyMaster of Arts in Christian Ministry (MACM) students also learn about their own sense of vocation and ministry and about the settings in which they serve in ministry. Faculty help the students engage their ministry settings and oversee them as they develop a project in ministry that is a learning-serving experience.
