A Note from Stuart |
I love Spring. Everything is possible. Even our website update! It took a little longer than planned, but I think you will like what we have done. The whole site has been refreshed and improved.
The navigation is a little snazzier.
Each book now has its own special page (check out A House for Birdie's page - Peep!).
We have added a whole section of Math Bibliographies (a nod to Maurice Sykes,Executive Director of the Early Childhood Leadership Institute at the University of the District of Columbia, for the inspiration).
We also added a For Booksellers & Librarians section, which has ready-for-Kinko's artwork for signs and special order forms.
There is lots more, but I think I'll leave a few surprises for you to discover!
This was truly a group effort. Many thanks to my associate Janet Ginsburg, DesignScout's one and only Scout, and ByteStudios' Michael Diedrick and Matthew Restorff.
Happy Spring everybody! And Happy Math!
Best wishes,

MathStart in Bangalore!
|
On my travels through India last year, I had the privilege of meeting Raju Shahani, who told me about the Christel House school in Bangalore, one of six schools for underprivileged kids started by a remarkable woman from Indianapolis named Christel DeHaan. Thirteen years ago, when Christel sold her company, time-share vacation pioneer Resort Condominiums International, she resolved to devote the next part of her life to philanthropy. Christel House International (CTI) was founded to help children around the world break the cycle of poverty by providing food, shelter, medical care, and a first-rate education. Along with reading and math, "children are taught the importance of caring, sharing and making a difference" at Christel House schools. As Christel's own story illustrates, success in life means finding ways to help others. There are now Christel House schools in Bangalore, India; Mexico City, Mexico; Cape Town, South Africa; Caracas, Venezuela; and Indianapolis in the U.S. In addition, CTI sponsors a Scholars Program for children from displaced families in Serbia. Many thanks to Diana Lam, CTI's vice-president for Global Education and Community Outreach (and former deputy chancellor for Teaching and Learning at New York City's Department of Education) for sending these photos of students in India reading my books. Wow! Math really is a universal language!

How to Make Family Math Night Lemonade out of Lemons and Other Useful Tips: An Interview with Kindergarten Teacher Kim Mueller
|
In 2004, Kim Mueller, a kindergarten teacher from New Jersey, wandered into one of my sessions at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in Philadelphia. Little did I know what was in store...
Kim was working on her dissertation ("Teacher Perceptions of Math Instruction") and interested in ways to help kids see math in real life contexts - which, of course, is what MathStart is all about.
After the session, Kim came up to me and announced that I would be going to her school. I politely explained that I travel a lot and my school-visit calendar was all booked up. She didn't blink. And three years later, sure enough, there I was at the Florence L. Walther Elementary School in Lumberton, New Jersey.
After literally years of planning, though, Kim faced a major last-minute scheduling conflict: a "Ladies' Night Out" fundraiser set for the very same evening as my "Family Math Night." Again, Kim didn't blink. Instead, she and her wonderful Walther colleagues whipped up a "Dads' Night Out."
Nearly 300 kids and their parents -- including a few stray moms -- came. It was a lot of fun, but boy was my hand tired. Thanks to Kim, I signed 1,124 books that day.
So thanks, Kim, for not blinking!
Recently, my associate, Janet Ginsburg, sat down with Kim to talk about math, teaching and one fabulous "Dad's Night Out"!
(There are a lot of pictures, so please be patient!)

Lemonade for Sale: The Real Deal!
|
Thanks to a "Google Alert" for an article that ran in the Daily Southtown newspaper, last May, we learned about Jan Toepke's enterprising second graders at Haines Elementary School in New Lenox, Illinois. Each Spring, Mrs. Toepke's students set up in-school lemonade stands, just like the kids in the Elm Street Kids Club from Lemonade for Sale. They make signs, measure and mix up lots of lemonade, and count money (with a little help from an intrepid team of mom-volunteers). They also sell cookies. M'mmmm! Last year, they raised over $250 for the school playground. Now plans are in the works to make 2008 another great lemony success. Good going, Haines Second Graders! Teachers! Parents! Librarians! Booksellers! Have a cool idea for a MathStart activity? Please share! (and send pictures...)

MATHSTART MAIL - HOORAY!

"...He and his dad even made their own space ship out of cereal boxes and an egg carton..."
|
|
Dear Mr. Murphy,
My son, Calvin, and I love your books! My mother-in-law purchased one, Seaweed Soup, and we have since checked out many titles from the library.
My son is 3 and we read from both level 1 and 2 books. His current favorite is Captain Invincible. He reads it several times a day and now knows the names of the common 3D shapes -- although pronouncing "rectangular prism" is a toughie.
He and his dad even made their own spaceship out of cereal boxes and an egg carton.
Being a former 8th grade math teacher, I am always looking for inconspicuous ways to incorporate math concepts/vocab and your books are perfect. They are always mathematically correct, never talking down or dumbing down the concepts for small children.
Thank you for providing such wonderful resources. Keep up the great work!
Sincerely, Cara J. Landolt Oshkosh, WI
Hi Cara! Hi Calvin!
Wow! What a lovely way to start the week. I greatly appreciate your kind words and enthusiastic support. And boy oh boy, am I impressed with Captain Calvin! I sure am glad he knows his space shapes!
cheers,
