O SAY CAN YOU SEE?
Led by Linda Considine, Assistant Professor of Voice at NWSA, the New World School of the Arts Opera Theatre singers continue to be a valuable component of a very important day for new Americans and their friends and families. On the second Friday of each month an ambassador for NWSA/MDC arrives at the courthouse in downtown Miami, passes the security checkpoint and enters a courtroom packed with our country's newest citizens. The ceremony is formal, with Honor Guard, the Oath of Allegiance, the Pledge to the Flag, and a budding NWSA opera singer leading the National Anthem. No microphone necessary!
The response every month is very gratifying as the students who sing are mobbed at the small reception following the ceremony. So many compliments and thanks are received from not only the participants, but also from the courthouse officials and staff. For NWSA singers, it is also an emotional occasion. They report how moving it is to be part of the special day for so many, and some remember their own special day, or have heard their parents' or grandparents' stories of the day they became citizens. They are proud and honored to be included and appreciated. It is always a wonderful experience and NWSA is grateful for this special way to serve our community.

NWSA GETS OUT THE VOTE
Three graphic designers from the NWSA college program participated in an AIGA initiative to encourage voting. The initiative encourages its members to create nonpartisan posters and videos that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote in the upcoming general election. Rosario Martinez-Cañaz, graphic design professor highlights the importance of this project to her students underscoring that this initiative allows them to "use their talent to affect a change in the world and to get their work exposed to a much broader audience."
Selected NWSA students/entries:
Anthony Anaya - Homeless, Not Voteless, artist statement: "Registering to vote without a fixed address is definitely a roadblock to homeless and low-income people. But the law states that a homeless person should be able to vote even if they don't live in a traditional dwelling - you can register even if you are living on the street."
Junli Kato - Earn your right to complain, artist statement: "If you didn't vote, how can you justify your complaints? Stop criticizing the government and do something about it by voting, at least then you have earned your right to complain about it," and You are the Magic, artist statement: "We can't wait around and hope that Magic will solve everything. Your vote is the rabbit, and the magic trick, pulled from the hat."
Eric Fernandez - VOTE, artist statement: "We all have voices. Vote and be heard!"

ANOTHER MARTHA HILL FOUNDATION AWARD FOR NWSA
Lissa Smith, NWSA 2009 high school graduate, has been awarded this year's Martha Hill Fund Young Professional Award. Lissa began her dance training in Miami, graduating from the high school dance program of New World School of the Arts.
NWSA dance teacher Lara Murphy, comments, "Lissa Smith came to New World School of the Arts eager to learn and ready to take the stage. During her time at NWSA her passion for dance and her dedication to both technical and artistic growth were unwavering. Lissa never gave less than 110% of herself. She's always made the most of her talent and versatility and I look forward to seeing how her career continues to blossom now that she is dancing with Hubbard Street 2."

Lisa attended The Boston Conservatory to continue her dance studies and danced in summer programs at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Jacob's Pillow, The Juilliard School, Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, Martha Graham, The Joffrey Ballet and The Joffrey Midwest Workshop.
