FILMS4PEACE ADVOCATES FOR WORLD PEACE... NWSA JOINS IN
NWSA will join hundreds of cultural institutions worldwide, from Australia to Zimbabwe, supporting films4peace to celebrate World Peace Day - an international UN day of ceasefire, and a day for individuals, organizations and countries to demonstrate acts of peace. Curated by Mark Coetzee, former visual arts faculty member of NWSA, films4peace is an annual short film commission by PUMA.Peace featuring 21 of today's most innovative artists visually interpreting the subject of peace. These art films will be released at cutural venues globally, online on World Peace Day - September 21, 2012 - on a dedicated films4peace website, through social networking and video sharing sites and blogs amongst others.
Although NWSA students are not participating artistically in this initiative, the school will be screening one of the films in its lobby area for students, faculty and community to enjoy. The screening will also be carried into the class room by NWSA Digital Media faculty member and films4peace organizer at New World School of the Arts, Alisa Pitchenik. She explains, "It's important in today's society to expose art students and the public to creative interpretations of art that seeks/ shows peace initiatives....NWSA is supportive of efforts by artists to encourage/show/expose art on World Peace Day."

BALM IN GILEAD LAUNCHES NWSA THEATER SEASON WITH A SPECIAL RECOGNITION
New World School of the Arts launches its theatre season with Lanford Wilson's 1965 award-winning play Balm in Gilead. The edgy production will be the launching pad for a dynamic NWSA theater season and will feature a special pre-event reception to recognize Joseph Adler, Producing Artistic Director at GableStage at the Biltmore, for his steadfast commitment and support to New World School of the Arts. Adler will also receive recognition just before the first show in the Louise O. Gerrits Theater. Directed by NWSA faculty member Gail Garrisan, Balm in Gilead highlights the talents of 28 New World School of the Arts college and five high school students, along with guest artist Rayner G. Garranchan, a 2011 graduate from the NWSA college program.
Inspired by his own experience living among the less fortunate in the city of New York, Lanford Wilson was in his mid 20's when he wrote this play. He was a young playwright from Missouri, now in New York City sharing a small apartment with two roommates. It was during this time that he sought refuge away from the confines of his four walls by frequenting Pan Diner, a diner located in a less than desirable area where the underbelly of the city came together to share their lives. While these were unfamiliar people to Wilson, who came from the Midwest, their daily interaction offered him a window to their world and helped him realize that these were human beings with a past, a present and a future. By sharing their hopes and broken dreams, this riffraff of the city transformed the way in which Wilson viewed society. October 5, 6, 12, 13; 7:30 PM October 7, 14; 2:00 PM Louise O. Gerrits Theater 25 NE 2 Street, 8th Floor, Miami General admission $12 / Students and seniors $5 Information at 305-237-3541 |

RESPECTED CHOREOGRAPHER AND NWSA ALUM LAUNCHES DANCE SEASON WITH EXHILLARATING MASTER CLASS
NWSA College Dance students were off to a great season this year, as they participated in a dynamic Master Class with NWSA Dance Alum LaMichael Leonard. The NWSA BFA graduate came back to his alma mater where he offered his eager protégés a modern dance warm-up and phrases inspired by his work with major modern dance companies, including Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane, with whom he has been dancing since 2007, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Leonard, who is originally from Tallahassee, began his professional dance career with Martha Graham Dance Company soon after earning his college degree from NWSA. RUINED HIGHLIGHTS SUPERB NWSA TALENT
Garnering rave reviews from respected arts critics including Christine Dolen from TheMiami Herald, Ruined, by Lynn Nottage, is hailed as "an eye-opener" by Ron Levitt from ENV Magazine. This poignant play, directed by Joseph Adler, exposes the realities of a man-dominated world during a time of war where women, in the conflict-torn Congo, are nothing more than disposable pastimes. With the largest cast ever on the GableStage Theater, this 2009 Pulitzer Prize work highlights the exceptional talent of four NWSA alumni who, despite their young careers, bring to the stage a riveting and exceptionally heartfelt performance.
Review of 'Ruined' by Christine Dolen
Their acting professor, David Kwiat, who assumes the role of a diamond merchant accompanies Marckenson Charles, Renata Eastlick, Devon Dassaw and the lead, Lela Elam. He tells us, "as a professor who has taught Renata, Markenson and Devon, it is a very special experience to share the stage with them as colleagues, as fellow actors. After all, we are here to train the next generation of artists - and to see that fulfilled is a priceless experience."
From an alumni standpoint, Renata Eastlick shares her thoughts as well, "I love working with NWSA faculty and alumni! I know I will always be pushed and challenged no matter what happens. With a show as intense as Ruined, you need that and you need trust. Plus, it's like family reunion! You laugh, you share fun memories, but overall you really work together to get the best characters and show. It's been an awesome and unforgettable experience. I wouldn't change a thing."
