WELCOME
A MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST OF NWSA, DR. JEFFREY HODGSON
"While South Floridians have been applying layers of sunscreen, bouncing in the gentle waves of the ocean and soaking up the sun on its beautiful beaches, the black and white checkered halls of New World School of the Arts have been abuzz with activity. Summer programs, class reunions, new furniture, cleaning and repairs and all the other preparations have happened or are underway for the start of the new school year. We welcome you back to our halls of learning with the excitement and anticipation of the outstanding school year to come."

YOUNG BLOOD: HOMECOMING 2012 - 5TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION RE-UNITES ALUMNI Thirty-one NWSA high school and college alumni will again come together for what has become an annual homecoming tradition for the growing list of artists. This is the fifth installment of Young Blood, an annual fundraiser founded by 2008 high school graduate Michelle Gomez. A new addition to the Young Blood team is guest curator, John Witty - 2005 NWSA alumni. "My aim as guest curator is to create a coherent presentation of the cross section of attitudes and media that express our relationship to our physical and conceptual home. This can describe a literal place of origin, such as Miami or South Florida, as well as the conceptual structures we create to embody more abstract notions of home, like a sense of belonging or the recollection of a moment of learning or discovery." All the artwork is for sale and a portion of the sales will benefit the NWSA high school and college visual arts department, which helped shape and develop the artistic talents of this group. Participating artists include: Roman Arevalo, Barbara Bollini, Grace Berler, Nicole Burko, Tamara Cedre, Morel Doucet, Alice Eagle, Michelle Carmen Fernandez, Diana Garcia, A.G. Viva, Sheena Klimoski, Matthew Krawcheck, Melissa Leandro, Danielle Levine, Ray Lopez, Amanda Madrigal, T. EXQUISITE CONSEQUENCE BRINGS THE GALLERY TO LIFE
Although most schools are asleep for the summer, the New World Gallery is very much awake and bustling with activity to bring Exquisite Consequence to life. The exhibition, which features the works of 16 NWSA faculty members, is based on the exquisite corpse idea - a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. The NWSA gallery space has been subdivided into 16 separate art spaces and each area has been assigned to a participating artist. Each artist has four days in which to complete his or her work before handing the space over to the next artist in the sequence. The objective is to create one cohesive artwork based on the collective artistic execution of the group. The challenge, however, is that the artists will not have the opportunity to see their predecessor's work until they are ready to create their own section.

COLLEGE ORIENTATION WEEK
PROMISES MORE THAN A GOOD TIME
New World School of the Arts College will host 2012 Orientation Week from Sunday, August 19 through Monday, August 27. To welcome the new batch of aspiring artists, NWSA has planned a week filled with exciting activities and programs designed to introduce the students to the many aspects of life in downtown Miami, as well as to familiarize them with faculty and staff, advising and social events, and academics and student life. The week takes off with a hearty Continental Sunday breakfast where the students and their parents will have an opportunity to meet other incoming pupils, administration, and faculty, tour the NWSA facilities and, through a multi-disciplinary performance, sample what New World School of the Arts is all about.
The rest of the week promises to be just as exciting, offering students a plethora of activities that include, among others, financial workshops where students will be introduced to the basics of budgeting and financial management, relaxing Yoga classes to help alleviate the stress associated with being in a new environment and an adventurous journey to Miami Metro Zoo, where they will help professionals keep the zoo in optimal conditions. The newcomers will also take a stimulating trip to Miami Beach to enjoy the sights and sounds of sunny South Florida. Orientation week will conclude with a Welcome Back Bash at "100 Montaditos" where new students will not only be invited to socialize and get tastefully rowdy, but they will also find out who is the lucky winner of the $500 NWSA Scholarship Sweepstakes!

DEAN OF MUSIC OFFERS IMPRESSIVE PIANO CONCERT IN HONG KONG Milton Ruben Laufer, new dean of music at NWSA, has traveled to Hong Kong to deliver a first-time piano recital at the Mega Box Tongli Theater followed by a two-week piano intensive at the Great Melody School of Music. The program includes masterpieces from Spanish composers Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla as well as from the French piano virtuosos Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Laufer's playing has been hailed as "fanfare-like...vividly colored..." by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Laufer, a seasoned educator and respected pianist who's Fulbright Scholarship propelled his research in Spanish piano music, has been recognized internationally as a leading performer and scholar in this area. Among the works he presented are Sevilla, Asturias, and Cuba from Albeniz; as well as de Falla's First Spanish Dance, Danza del Terror and Danza Ritual del Fuego. Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse and Ravel's Alborada Del Gracioso, followed by Albeniz's La Vega, culminated the evening with an impressive encore and three curtain calls. Laufer will remain in Hong Kong for several weeks where he has undertaken an artistic residency teaching, lecturing and adjudicating the work of young piano students. |
REFLECTIONS OF OUR HUMANITY CAPTURES THE INTEREST OF THE YOUNG "Have we lost our way, lost the intent to embrace the gift of humanity and being human?" Inspired by this reflection, NWSA alum Camilo Rojas conceived Reflections of Our Humanity, an ongoing collaboration with photojournalist Valerie Lopez and Love to Langa to assist in the cultivation of "our humanity by engaging in its reflection, beauty and the sanity of human life."Using photography and motivated by the scarce resources of young children, Rojas and Lopez traveled to South Africa where they interacted with 34 children of the Siyaphambili Orphan Village located outside of Cape Town. Providing the children with disposable cameras and instructions "to reflect themselves through photography" the NWSA artist challenged the young photo aficionados to identity their unique perspective of their immediate environment through their new-found lens. "The idea was simple yet throughout its process we grew deeply moved by the experience and witnessed the magical connection the kids had with photography," said Camilo. "The photographic body of work was profoundly intimate and moving however its purpose and achievement was far greater." Of the 34 films that were distributed, 19 were developed locally, curated, printed and displayed at the orphanage walls with the intention of promoting the youngsters' perspective by showcasing their first gallery exhibition. All proceeds from the sales of these unique photographs will be designated to fund these children's education and the improvement of their living conditions. |
KING LION BROWN JAMES' HEALING LOVE NWSA visual artist Kareem Fletcher (BFA 2008), who began his career 20 years ago, as he explains, "by littering my living room floor with drawings of my favorite cartoon characters," became a celebrity this summer as he joined Miami Heat fans making his debut as a puppeteer on the steps of the American Airlines Arena. Drawing a crowd eager to talk to and touch - well, not him, but his King Lion Brown James - just before the 2nd, 3rd and 4th championship games, was the summation of Kareem's heartfelt dedication and served as living proof that love can conquer all. Kareem created King Lion Brown James "to help heal the world using love and support as its medium." Inspired by his young daughter, who suffers from a birth injury called Erb's Palsy, Kareem aimed to create a motivational tool for her speedy recovery. The result was King Lion Brown James, a majestic noble puppet with a glorious red coat and trendy sneakers "that represents the courage, strength, will and love it takes to go through the healing process of any illness. "Using his Lion as a symbol of his heart, explains Kareem, "King Lion Brown James has helped people to believe in themselves and the ability to overcome obstacles." Through his inseparable feline friend, Kareem plans to support other families and their fight to get well and live healthy lives. King Lion Brown James has attended events such as Fashion for Charity, a charitable event held at the Missaukee Casino and has received the attention of Channel Seven local news, the Miami Herald, and the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. He has also inspired recent articles to bring awareness to Erb's Palsy. Contact King Lion Brown James by email or by phone at 305-984-9864. "For twenty-five years Miami-Dade County Days in Tallahassee has had a unique partnership with NWSA. Each year students from NWSA's Visual Arts department create a design to be made into ties and scarves for participants to wear during Miami-Dade County Days - a two-day event showcasing our county and municipalities during the Florida Legislative Session. One lucky student's design is chosen. The student also receives a check and a trip to Tallahassee to take part in Dade Days. This video is just a glimpse of what took place earlier this year. We are proud of our relationship with NWSA for a quarter of a century and salute the school's outstanding academic and artistic achievements. We look forward to view the 2013 Dade Days tie and scarf design - it's always a winner!"

Miami-Dade County Days
______________________The 2012 NWSA Dade Days Ties and Scarves competition winner was graphic designer Justin Nuñez (BFA 2012). The talented artist traveled to Tallahassee accompanied by his graphic design professor, Rosario Martinez-Cañas and NWSA Provost, Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, along with the Miami-Dade delegation. During the two-day session Justin had the unique opportunity to mingle with dignitaries, address his State's politicians, and shake the hand of Governor Scott, but most rewarding, Justin was honored to see everyone proudly sporting his new tie and scarf designs, and showcase the name of his alma mater...in grand scale!
