VENUS WILLIAMS SHARES PASSION FOR THE ARTS
Tennis legend Venus Williams recently held a reception at the Miami InterContinental Hotel in downtown Miami to announce the winning painting for her new Eleven by Venus Williams: Empowering Artists Through the Arts contest. Williams, who personally judged all the artworks for the poster competition, chose Billy Myrtil's design to create tee-shirts for her EleVen clothing line. The winning entry, which has already been turned into trendy tee-shirts for men and women, is on sale at the InterContinental Hotel for a limited time, and 100% proceeds will benefit New World School of the Arts [NWSA].
"We are delighted to add Venus Williams to our roster of supporters," said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Interim Provost of NWSA. "We are also very grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Venus in this initiative and to have been chosen as the recipients of her philanthropic efforts. The EleVen by Venus Williams tee-shirt initiative highlights Venus' passion for the arts - but most importantly, it demonstrates her commitment to our youth and to their development as artists."

STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE - AWARENESS THROUGH THE EYES OF NWSA GRAPHIC DESIGNERS
A bullying awareness initiative conceived by author and curator Janet Batet, and led by NWSA graphic design professor Rosario Martinez-Caņas, aims to highlight the ever-increasing bullying / school violence phenomenon present in public schools. The effort entailed addressing the issue in elementary, middle, and high schools through a poster competition in which 15 NWSA visual arts college students participated.
"Up to now, only adults have tried to offer solutions to this issue by people that might not necessarily be 'in touch' with the younger generations that are being affected," explained Martinez-Caņas. "We asked the graphic designers in the NWSA college program to look into the school violence issue and, through their art, offer a way to reach their particular audience in each of the three school categories they were assigned. Our objective was for each artist to address the specific kind of violence that occurs at different points in a student's journey towards a high school degree."
Sponsored by Dr. Frederic E. Conde, Ed.D., Administrative Director, District/School Operations for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and former high school principal of New World School of the Arts, the three winning posters will be produced and distributed to all public schools in Miami-Dade County during the month of April to coincide with School Violence Awareness Week.

COLLEGE SPRING DANCE CONCERT FEATURES ICONIC MODERN CHOREOGRAPHY
A showcase of talent, versatility, and virtuosity the College Spring Dance Concert program presents a wide range of exciting dance works - two classics by modern dance masters and four contemporary premieres. Martha Graham's powerful and dramatic work from 1936, Prelude to Action, created just prior to WWII invokes the need for unity in forging the future. Another highlight of the concert, set to a lively jazz score, is Session for Six - choreographed in 1958 by Anna Sokolow, a master of early modern dance. In addition, Darshan Singh Bhuller's (Mapping #1) which utilizes video technology to turn the stage space and the conventions of choreography literally upside down will premier as well Gerard Ebitz's They Came from the North, a playful, skillfully executed theatrical dance that humorously invokes grade-B sci-fi films and the world of early 1960's television. Arnold Quintane's new work for NWSA dancers is a study in classic minimalism, set to a driving electronic musical score while Josée Garant has made a new dance, Short Stories, which brings the story, the storyteller, the book, and the pages of the story alive in movement.

TOP GIRLS BIDS FAREWELL TO THE BFA GIRLS
Presented by the New World School of the Arts college theater program, TOP GIRLS, a play by Caryl Churchill, bids farewell to the girls of class of 2012. Directed by Melissa Kollwitz, the all-women cast is comprised of six college seniors and four juniors who worked tirelessly for more than a month to master the five accents and dialects required of the show. Kollwitz is Adjunct Professor of Voice & Speech at NWSA.
"Caryl Churchill provides us with non-linear vignettes that give us a glimpse into the struggles women faced in man's working world circa 1982. The social stigmas of the time - through media, pop culture, conventions, traditions, and politics - define their roles as women, forcing them to decide what is more valuable: a life as a career woman, or one as a housewife," explained director Kollwitz.

THRU SHOWCASES INNOVATIVE ARTWORK AND ENGAGES THE AUDIENCE THROUGH COMPELLING INTERACTION
Twenty-five 2012 BFA candidates have created new contemporary cutting edge artworks for their final show titled THRU, ranging from painting, photography, video art, animation, sculpture, graphic design, printmaking and digital media. An interactive exhibition, the show offers the audience the opportunity to become subjects in the artwork by inviting them to interact on a personal level.
"The work of our graduates is both compelling and innovative. They are constantly taking creative risks to take their work to a new level" stated Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts. "This show in particular is full of surprises designed to draw the audience into the artwork. From a rock-climbing wall comprised of four larger-than-life paintings, to a set reminiscent of a dilapidated world, to a video installation where guests become active participants as well as the background, as technology fuses with its environment to create a unique piece of art, THRU is without a doubt an extraordinary display of innovative artistry."
