Three Sisters

THREE SISTERS GRACES STAGE AT NWSA

New World School of the Arts' Silver Anniversary brings forth one of Anton Chekhov's masterpieces. Three Sisters, directed by NWSA theater faculty member Gail Garrisan, highlights the artistic talent of the college juniors and seniors. Considered a drama by the playwright himself, the play explores the complexity of human nature by looking through the lens of realism rather than sensationalism and placing particular emphasis on the mundane. Garrisan notes the significance of this production "one of the criticisms of Chekhov plays is that "nothing happens". There is no action! Perhaps. But maybe his genius is that everything happens. Just not in a way that we would expect. Sometimes, life is outrageous. Sometimes, it is dramatic. But mostly it is not."

BFA Dancers 2012BFA DANCE CONCERT PAYS TRIBUTE TO PHENOMENAL WOMEN

As one of the most anticipated performances of the college year, "X" College BFA Dance Concert marks the most comprehensive and final project delivered by NWSA's dance aspiring graduates and this year explores and illustrates the concept of sisterhood. The class will present ten works by young female choreographers, which explore their relationship to each other and to their communities as daughters, friends, mothers, and artists.  From the words of Maya Angelou's poem Phenomenal Woman to the music of Beethoven and rock band The Fall, the ten original works resonate with a heartbeat, the fire that is life, and the warmth of human connection and dislocation of loss. The 2012 BFA Dance candidates are: Kira Alvarado, Gabriella Bhatia, Patricia Carby, Veronica Cato, Maribel Cordero, Paola Escobar, Paige Henry, La'Dreauna Johnson, Pei-Rong Wu, and Andrea Ollarvide.

One person show fundraising

POPULAR ONE-PERSON SHOWS OFFER YOU A SECOND CHANCE TO SUPPORT NWSA! HURRY, ONLY ONE NIGHT SPECIAL PRESENTATION

If you didn't have an opportunity to catch our popular monologues this year, this is your opportunity to do so! Four one-person shows by NWSA Theater BFA candidates will present their original scripts at GableStage as a fund-raising event. All proceeds will go to New World School of the Arts to help cover the cost of sending the college senior class to New York City in May as part of their Senior Showcase, where they will perform for NYC producers and agents.

The four shows are: Mary Sunshine by Ashley Chang. A quirky, fun spoof of 'performance art'. Where is the old proverbial 'hook' to get someone off the stage when you need it?! The Magical Journey of Abraham and the Moon by Luis Restrepo. A faraway land, a hero in search of his mother, a guiding moon, an iron beast, danger, magic, and adventure. This is the all-too-real story of the migrant children, as seen through magical eyes of a singular child. Oo, Mr. Corey, You Bad! by Devon Dassaw. A Baptist minister meets his congregation for the last time - and what he has to say is The Gospel Truth. Be prepared to go to church and respond to his holler! Who Are YOU? by José Ignacio Elósegui. A young man's story of all the important moments of his life and how they have shaped his identity. Middle school and high school was never this painful or funny!

So Touch Exhibition

DO TOUCH!

In collaboration with MDC's ACCESS-MEED Center, New World School of the Arts is currently presenting a ceramics exhibition designed specifically for low vision and visually challenged students and arts enthusiasts. Conceived by Susan Miller, sign language interpreter at the MEED Center and gallery curator, and led by NWSA ceramics faculty Susan Banks, DO TOUCH a tactile exhibition, is comprised of more than two dozen wall-hung and free standing sculptures that offer a compelling design for the visually challenged. The forms and themes for this body of work has been created keeping in mind the highly specific audience, in order to present an exhibition that is understandable by touch alone. With titles such as Mr. Bumps, Freedom, and In Search of Lost Time, among others, each piece offers rich textural changes that are both, visually and tactualy pleasing. Valuable components of the show are the corresponding label in braille and the audio tours conducted by Access-Meed Center staff.

 FASCINATING FACULTY FACTS
THE LOVE SICK MAC: [a poem by David Kwiat]
I long so to interface with your Microsoft touch again.

I would offer you mega bytes, if only I could.

You have reduced me to an obsolete 5" floppy

when once my expandable hard drive was the talk of every modem.

Once you scanned a high-resolution 3D color picture of me

forever to be kept in your internal memory.

Little did I process that you would one day purge me like one of

your viruses forever to be booted out and dumped in the trash.

I swear, my cursor will follow you to the four corners of your

screen, I will look inside your Windows and scroll,

until I can coax a soft return from you.

. . . . and that's not just AppleTalk®.

David KwiatDavid Kwiat has been a professor in the Theater Division at New World School of the Arts since 1989. He is the recipient of an Endowed Teaching Chair and his many performances in South Florida have earned him two Carbonell Awards: "Best Actor" and "Best Supporting Actor." David authored John Barrymore: Confessions of an Actor, which he has performed at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival, The King's Head Theatre in London and throughout the United States. He also penned A Traveler in Residence - a collection of poems from which this one was borrowed.
