ART HISTORY INSTITUTE TAKES NWSA'S ART CURRICULUM TO NEW HEIGHTS
Modeled after the Ecole du Louvre, in France the Art History Institute, a collaboration of Bass Museum of Art and New World School of the Arts, will provide an intensive one-year art history seminar to every first year student in NWSA's Visual Arts College Program. As of this month, 40 students will come to the Bass Museum on Miami Beach once a week for a two-hour course taught by Dr. Adrienne von Lates, Director of Education at the Museum. The program will focus on the art history of Western Civilization, covering the wide span from Pre-Historic times through the present day. Held within the museum's galleries this seminar will draw on the museum's permanent collection of antiquities, Renaissance and Baroque works of art. This seminar will be incorporated into New World School of the Arts' existing WARP [Workshop for Art Research and Practice] curriculum, grouping periods of eras and artists in thematic clusters and ideas. Rather than concentrating on rote memorization of artists and dates, this seminar will encourage dialogue and interpretation.

NWSA HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR CONCERT HONORS OUR NATION'S HEROES "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: Grant them eternal rest, O Lord"
The NWSA music season starts with a tribute to the victims of our nation's worst tragedies. Under the direction of Albert Clark, the High School Choir Concert will offer a performance featuring the music of English composer John Rutter, "Requiem." First performed in 1985, in Dallas, Texas, under the direction of the composer himself, the first movement of this lyrical choral piece underscores the sentiment of the music and the profound meaning it brings as a 9/11 commemorative selection. The two soprano solos will be performed by Frances Collins and Jessica Perez.

NEW WIND ENSEMBLE DIRECTOR OPENS THE SEASON WITH A HEARTFELT CONCERT
Under the baton of Director Brent A. Mounger, the NWSA High School Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Camerata will present its first concert to welcome the fall season. With guest artist John Kricker, renowned Trombone South Florida trombone player, the wind ensemble will offer a rendition of De Meij. Other interpretations include Tchaikovsky's No 5. Finale; Toccata by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams; and Eagle Squadron a march by Bandmaster Kenneth J. Alford, dedicated to all who took part in World War II.
Director Mounger, the new addition to the music division, is a seasoned musician deeply involved in music education. With an impressive roster of accomplishments, his most notable achievements include his role as President-Elect for the Florida Collegiate Music Educator's National Conference where is served as President in 2006. While President of FCMENC, he restructured the statewide organization and was able to increase the association's membership. A partnership program was also established where larger universities in Florida were zoned with smaller universities and community colleges to help establish links and communication between future music educators. Mounger also served on the Florida Music Educators Association State Board from 2005-2007. For the past four years he has served as Director of Bands at Coral Reef Senior High School. While at Coral Reef the Wind Ensemble received national acclaim and was invited to perform at the 2011 National Concert Band Festival. Under Mounger's direction, the Coral Reef Senior High band program received Superior ratings at District and State Jazz and Concert Assessments. Brent Mounger received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Stetson University and he is, the present time, Bass Trombonist with the Miami Wind Symphony, a professional Wind Ensemble in South Florida.

SPRING AWAKENING - NWSA'S DARING THEATER PREMIERE
In celebration of its 25th year anniversary, New World School of the Arts will launch the college theater season in a grand and daring scale, as it presents the Tony-award winning musical Spring Awakening, based on the play by Frank Wedekind. Directed by NWSA theater faculty and renowned actor James Randolph, this musical highlights the artistic talent of the college sophomores, juniors and seniors. A controversial play, due in part to its sexual connotations in the western culture, Randolph notes that "this play has had a life in Universities because it deals with those issues that directly impact the youth of this country. In fact it was produced at New World School of the Arts in 1994. Having been familiar with it in graduate school but seeing it performed, I was truly engaged and intrigued."

ANTONIO MADRUGA, HAILED PIANO PRODIGY, CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
As a freshman in 2008, he was part of the Jazz ensemble that brought home first prize from the Savannah Music Festival Competition. You read about him in 2009 as he received "outstanding" ratings in the Essentially Ellington Competition, and again in 2010 when he played at the White House during the "Peer to Peer" Latin Jazz jam. He has played with Jazz greats including Wynton Marsalis, Troy Roberts and Paquito de Rivera. Today, the Ella Fitzgerald award winning Antonio "Tony" Madruga continues to impress his peers, mentors and professors who have come to expect his achievements. "Tony is special. He's an artist. He thinks, dreams, and plays piano like an artist," highlights Jim Gasior, Dean of Music at New World School of the Arts, and Tony's former jazz instructor. At just 17-years old and one of only two competitors still in high school, Tony was one of 12 pianists selected internationally as a semifinalist to perform in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. This year's competition was of particular importance to the Monk Institute as it forms part of the many initiatives in celebration of the institution's 25th anniversary.
