NWSA PROVOST WELCOMES THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

An anniversary is a time for celebration, for remembering the past and looking towards the future. The 25th Anniversary of New World School of the Arts is worthy of outstanding recognition and unprecedented celebration. It is a time to recognize the committed and visionary leaders who have fostered this institution from the very beginning, to the students who fill its halls and studios with energy and excitement from the start of each school day to the drop of the curtain at each performance. This year we celebrate the talented and motivated students, professional artist-faculty, dedicated artistic staff, our outstanding partner educational institutions from the State of Florida, and an exciting community whose artistic awakening is echoed in the growth of New World School of the Arts. Miami, South Florida and the State of Florida stand on the cusp of the future - and New World School of the Arts is creatively leading the way. So join with me in pride for all that we have done and all we dream to do. Connect and re-connect with New World School of the Arts and help build its path to the future. Let's celebrate!

WARM GREETINGS FROM THE NWSA HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

As we close out the 24th year of exceptional experiences and unforgettable events, I am more than excited to welcome in the 25th Anniversary of New World School of the Arts. Now I look forward to expectations of a year filled with artistic training and academic growth that will inspire young artists through a rigorous curriculum and endless artistic opportunities that have and will continue to place NWSA among the top arts conservatories in the nation. The faculty and staff have demonstrated a "team" approach that has produced high student achievement and artistic growth for all. It will be a rewarding and successful year as we continue to approach it with the passion and dedication that this NWSA community is capable of.

SIX + SIX EXHIBITION LAUNCHES THE ART SEASON

Opening the visual arts season at New World School of the Arts, Six + Six Exhibition, curated by Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA, highlights the work of six '2011 high school visual arts graduates and six '2011 BFA grads. The compilation of work clearly illustrates the diverse student body composition at New World School of the Arts and demonstrates the level of art that is produced at the conservatory.

Asher Mones, one of the high school exhibitors, explains about his piece, Miami Wata, which was selected for the show "The video explores the idea of the Bermuda Triangle and how Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico have formed this triangle area of natural disasters. I also draw inspiration from certain voodoo rituals and mythical creatures that might have existed in the waters surrounding Miami, by cultures in the Caribbean."

Among the other pieces that will presented are Daiana Oneto's Tubes, a collection of very expressive facial portraits painted on Mylar to create a spatial feeling; Las Memorias del Pasado, by Vanessa Lacayo, showcasing detailed and exquisitely drawn representations of old classic buildings; Places Inside my Head, by Najoo Hong - a light, fun skillfully drawn series of sketchbook pages she identifies as the window to her soul; and Karla Davila's ME·TIC·U·LOUS, a series of skillfully cut paper demonstrating preciseness and immaculate execution.

Masked

MASKED HIGHLIGHTS NWSA TALENT

Nick Duckart and Abdiel Vivancos, both graduates of New World School of the Arts, played leading roles in the acclaimed theater production Masked, by Ilan Hatsor. Presented at GableStage, Masked, the story of three Palestinian brothers and the tribulations they face in a war-infested environment, graced the stage for four consecutive weeks, garnering record attendance and rave reviews.

Duckart, who offered a stellar performance in the role of the Middle brother "Na'im," emphasizes "Having the opportunity to take on a controversial play such as MASKED was one of the more rewarding experiences of my career. Taking on a story that is so far removed from my personal life was a challenge. Telling the story of three brothers on the West Bank required honesty, vulnerability, and specificity; all traits I learned to nurture while at NWSA."
