A Center of Excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts, at Miami Dade College - June 2011

Lisa Noffo

A MESSAGE FROM THE H.S. PRINCIPAL,

LISA NOFFO

As the very proud principal of New World School of the Arts High School, I would like to wish the high school graduating class of 2011 a productive and prosperous future. As they embark in their next endeavor, I offer this wise thought to the extraordinary graduates.

In the words of Charles Horton Cooley,

"An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one!"

Dance Senior Showcase 2011

TO BE CONTINUED...

Under the title To Be Continued..., 19 dancers from the NWSA high school class of 2011 will present 10 original works as their final project. Mentored by faculty members Rebecca Cannan and Lara Murphy, the complete roster of choreography has been produced by the talented group of students. This final show, which has something for everyone - from modern to hip hop to abstract works - opens with a choreography by Caitling Bonet, NFAA YoungArts winner in the Choreography category. This piece is a tug-of-war between one dancer and the rest of the group, where ultimately the soloist succumbs to the troupe.

DYNAMIC SENIOR SHOW EXPLORES THE UNEXPECTED

With a dynamic exhibition showcasing more than 40 remarkable pieces of art, 29 visual arts graduating seniors will conclude their tenure at New World School of the Arts as high school students. Curated by Maggy Cuesta, dean of the visual arts program at NWSA, and faculty members Tom Wyroba and Michael Loveland, the exhibition will showcase pieces representative of the students' works over the year. The show will include drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, video, and performance.

"It's an exceptional show that demonstrates the extraordinary level of artistic maturity of our graduating class" said Cuesta. "These students are highly creative and continually excel - not just because of their technique, but also because they are willing to experiment with their art. They are conceptual artists who produce artwork well beyond what is expected at such young age."

Opening Reception: June 3; 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

2215 NW 2nd Avenue, Wynwood

Jim Hunter Obituary

HEARTFELT FAREWELL TO JIM HUNTER

New World School of the Arts is in mourning after the loss of one of its founding visual arts teachers. Jim Hunter - loved by his students, respected by his peers, and recognized by the arts community for his commitment to arts education - passed away just a couple of weeks ago after a brief battle with lung cancer. Jim is survived by his wife, Lilia Garcia, also an artist, educator, arts advocate and former member of New World School of the Arts' Executive Board.

"Working hand-in-hand with Jim Hunter for the past ten years and interacting with him, both as a colleague and as an artist, helped me to realize that he truly loved working with students" explained Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. "He would come to my office at the end of the day and we would talk, brainstorm, and plan ways to make the high school program even better. He often brought with him the list of all the awards and scholarships the students received...like a father with his child going off to college. Jim's passion for the arts and commitment to his students made him an exceptional educator and unequaled mentor."

Jeffrey Hodgson, Interim Provost at NWSA also comments "New World School of the Arts has built a legacy of excellence since its first classes started 25 years ago, and like so many other dedicated professionals, Jim Hunter was there, steering young talent towards greatness from the beginning. We are thankful that Jim's legacy continues on in the school, in our alumni and students, but his presence will be deeply missed."

A celebration of Jim's life has been organized to bid one last farewell to this irreplaceable artist, friend, colleague, and mentor.

BFA DANCERS TO PERFORM IN SAN FRANCISCO

Accompanied by dean of dance Daniel Lewis, 14 recent graduates from the New World School of the Arts College will be traveling to California to present a repertoire of exhilarating choreography.

Among the works to be showcased is Darshan Singh Bhuller's The Virgin Queen. Premiered in part during Rising Stars, the piece portrays Queen Elizabeth as she learns of the secret marriage between her maid of honor and her favored Captain of the Queen's Guard (and alleged lover), Sir Walter Raleigh. Elizabeth would have expected to be consulted about such a marriage between her courtiers and knights. This work features multimedia with video effects and was performed in full during our Spring Concert. Also to be performed is the electrifying Battlefield by Robert Battle. This dynamic classic signature work garnered the Grand Prix and the Director's Special Prize for New World School of the Arts last summer, at the New Prague Dance Festival in Europe. In addition, the students will present alumni works by Matthew Bailey and Kaitlyn Bishop

Zonia Zena

VISUAL ARTIST ZONIA ZENA RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS  FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP

A recently awarded Fulbright Scholarship will enable New World School of the Arts visual artist and photographer, Zonia Zena, the opportunity to pursue a Master's degree in Spain. Zonia, who received the notification last week from The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, will be traveling to Madrid to begin her graduate program this summer.

Maria Martinez-Caņaz, 1985 Fulbright Scholar, renowned photographer, and one of Zonia's photography professors at New World School Arts comments, "When I heard that Zonia was the recipient of a 2011 Fulbright Grant to Spain, I felt very proud of her and her work, and told her to see this award as a validation of her career as a photographer. Zonia has the tenacity and dedication that is immensely necessary in an artist today. When I think of the work she has produced during her time at NWSA, the word that comes to mind is: humanistic. Her approach to the medium of photography is her genuine concern for other people's lives and well-being, in the tradition of Graciela Iturbide and Cristina Garcia-Rodero."

The Fulbright Program is a flagship international education exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between United States residents and the international community. The program provides participants - chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
