A STELLAR END OF YEAR FOR NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

New World School of the Arts' students and faculty end the year with a plethora of recognition, both from our community and nationally. As it continues to highlight the importance of the arts for the cultural advancement of our community, NWSA's enduring place as a beacon of the arts in South Florida is evident and coveted by aspiring artists from across our state and around the nation. Although fiscal challenges in education persist, New World School of the Arts is confident that the new academic year will shine brighter than ever as we prepare to hail our 25th year anniversary. We look forward to your support and to celebrating another season of educational excellence and outstanding performances.

The Crucible

THE CRUCIBLE ROUNDS-OFF THE SEASON AT NWSA

Arthur Miller's 1953 play The Crucible rounds-off the 2011 theater season at New World School of the Arts. Directed by Andrew Noble, the show will be presented by 24 juniors and seniors from the high school program.

After 21 years of teaching at New World School of the Arts, director/actor/professor Andrew Noble will conclude his tenure at NWSA with this powerful production. The Crucible was the first play performed by Noble and "Proctor" was his first role while in acting school - of this he comments, "The experience has guided my belief in the theatre of ideas throughout my career. I am privileged to return, full circle, to Miller's masterpiece and to re-examine it with this talented group of students." In The Crucible, responsibility for one's actions is placed on invisible 'unnatural causes' and a whole community is consumed by the belief that the devil is in Salem. NWSA's presentation, according to Noble, "seeks to embody that sense of forensic enquiry, the minute dissection of the cadaver, the observers on high, and the pattern of concentric circles reflecting Ann Putnam's cautionary words, 'There are wheels within wheels...fires within fires.'"

Andy Noble (Actors' Workshop, Introduction to Theatre, Mask Characterization, Theatre Appreciation) is a British actor, director, and teacher. He trained as teacher and actor at the University of Birmingham College of Education and the East 15 Acting School (in the methodology of Joan Littlewood) in England where he founded The Orchard Theatre Company, under the aegis of the Dartington Hall Trust/Beaford Centre, which became a model for peripathetic theatre in Europe. Noble was awarded a Director's Bursary by the Arts Council of Great Britain and served on the Theatre Panel, South West Arts Association. Subsequently, he became Artistic /Managing Director of The Plough Arts Centre, programming independent and mainstream cinema, theatre (including Royal Shakespeare Company), and art exhibitions.  Named Best Actor in a Play by The New Times for the title role in Brian Friel's The Faith Healer, Andrew Noble has acted in many local professional theatres. Andrew Noble began teaching at NWSA in 1990 and will retire from the program this year.

Rane Roatta 2011NWSA MUSICIANS JOIN PRESTIGIOUS THELONIOUS MONK ALL-STAR JAZZ SEXTET

New World School of the Arts pianist Antonio Madruga, 16, and saxophonist Rane Roatta, 18, have been selected to the 2011 edition of the Thelonious Monk National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet. "The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is making tremendous strides in jazz education - and for the youth of our country. Tony and Rane represent the very best of the very best. They are both consummate musicians and students. The Peer-to-Peer week with the TMIJ All-Star Sextet will make an indelible mark and memory upon their life and career" stated Jim Gasior, Interim Dean of Music at NWSA.

With lead funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Madruga and Roatta joined the group sponsored by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz as it introduces its "Peer-to-Peer" jazz education program in Baltimore and Washington, DC public schools earlier this month. In addition to Madruga and Roatta, who are featured in the current issue of DownBeat Magazine for winning its Annual Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Soloists, the members of the All-Star Sextet selected nationwide include trumpeter Nico Segal, 17, from Chicago; guitarist AJ Durham, 18, and drummer Michael Mitchell, 16, from Dallas; and bassist Daryl Johns, 14, from Englewood, NJ. "We're so excited about the trip," said Madruga, one of the best jazz pianists for his age in the country. "Learning Antonio Hart's music has been seriously challenging, but it has really helped get us to the next level."

BFA 2011

NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS VISUAL ARTISTS TRAVEL TO EUROPE IN SEARCH OF INSPIRATION AND EXCHANGE

Twenty one visual artists who recently graduated from the college program at New World School of the Arts (BFA 2011) will soon embark on a three-week journey through Europe to explore new avenues by which to express their art. Spearheaded by Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz, and accompanied by the NWSA dean of visual arts, Maggy Cuesta and faculty member Fred Snitzer, the group of students will have the invaluable opportunity to attend the Venice Biennale in Italy and visit countless museums, galleries and private collections in Venice as well as in Berlin, Germany.

Other generous supporters that made this initiative possible include the Knight Foundation, Dede and Bob Moss, Braman Family Foundation, Carole Getz, and American Express. "This is the fifth year that our senior class has the opportunity to travel abroad, and the second time they visit Berlin" commented Cuesta. "This journey not only enhances the perspectives of our students as artists, it also allows them to appreciate other cultures. Exchanging ideas with international artists is a transcendental experience that will inevitably change their lives by creating an awareness of the role that art plays in the growth and development of different societies. When they return to our city, many will bring with them new ideas and perhaps innovative techniques, but they will all return reinvigorated, inspired, and eager to make a difference in our community."
