PROJECT R RAISES AWARENESS OF GLOBAL ISSUES
Sponsored by Miami Dade College's Earth Ethics Institute, New World School of the Arts' Music and Visual Arts divisions have come together to bring forth environmental issues central to humanity. Lead by NWSA faculty members Rosario Martinez-Cañas, Dr. Susan Epstein Garcia, and Dr. Ferdinando De Sena, the collaborative project, titled PROJECT R, uses art as a springboard to initiate a dialogue among NWSA and MDC students about urban and natural environmental global issues.
The goal of PROJECT R is to highlight environmental problems, both urban and natural, through a series of branding actions and events that resonate with the target group. With words such as Reconsider, Rebirth, Repair, Revolution, and Reinvent, the project first aims to initiate an environmental dialogue among the NWSA / MDC group. An interactive wall installation will be erected at the MDC Wolfson Campus to depict graphically the issues raised during the first stage of PROJECT R. A collaborative effort, the wall includes the work of the seven college graphic designers who will interpret each of the environmental issues that their music counterparts chose. Finally, NWSA college and high school music students will present PROJECT R - A Concert at the Colony Theater, to illustrate the environmental issues through a combination of music compositions.

Abe's Penny will host "Abe's Penny Live" at New World School of the Arts' Artseen Gallery, in partnership with "O, Miami," a county-wide poetry festival inaugurating in April 2011. NWSA faculty member Elena Maria Garcia will provide the stage direction and Alfred Gershfeld will direct the NWSA Orchestra.
The story of Rita, the tyrannical and abusive wife of the timid Beppe, begins at her inn. The life of the couple is thrown into turmoil with the unexpected arrival of Gaspar, the first husband of Rita, whom all believed to have drowned. Believing that Rita has died in a fire, Gaspar has returned to obtain her death certificate so that he can remarry. Beppe sees this as an opportunity to escape from Rita's abuse and the two men agree to a game where the winnings will be Rita. A tale of mistaken identity, Captain Lovelock is about the lovesick Terentia, an elderly and wealthy widow from the provinces, who returns for a visit to the capital with very young ideas.
