A Center of Excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts, at Miami Dade College - July 2010 |
NWSA MAKES WAVES THIS SUMMER
For many students the summer months represent vacation time away from home and fun in the sun. For others including the NWSA students and alumni these sunny months are a time to explore their art and showcase their talent, both in our own back yard and abroad. Your support continues to be an invaluable source of inspiration for them, so this summer treat yourself to a New World School of the Arts exhibition during Second Saturday Art Walk, experience the thrill of theater during Summer Shorts or comment on the dance blog and show our students that you care. We look forward to sharing our magic with you.

ROBERT BATTLE, [1997 ALUM] LEADS THE ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATRE
Robert Battle, a 1997 alum from the NWSA high school dance program, has become the new Artistic Director for one our nation's most renowned dance companies - the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. With only two predecessors, Alvin Ailey and Judith Jamison, Battle has been entrusted to continue the mission of the Ailey troupe, however, the young director will lead with his own vision for a repertory company, incorporating three significant factors - past, present, and future. Not a stranger to the role, Battle founded his own dance company, Battleworks Dance Company in 2001 quickly gaining recognition for its unique outlook on the future of modern dance.
Despite his many accomplishments and recognition, Robert Battle continues to demonstrate his loyalty to the school that nurtured his passion and helped hone his craft. Offering annual masters classes to the would-be-choreographers and the young dancers that invigorate the dance studios of New World School of the Arts, the 37 year-old choreographer still has much to offer the young artists of Miami.

TONY AWARD FOR
KATIE FINNERAN, [1989 ALUM]
A graduate of the NWSA high school class of 1989, Katie Finneran received her second Tony Award earlier this month for her brilliant performance in the Broadway hit Promises, Promises. Opening the second act with the brief yet explosive role of Margue MacDougall, Finneran's hilarious performance sets the stage for what would be an award-winning production. Katie's first Tony Award was in 2002 for her equally deserving performance in Noises Off.
