MASTER CLASS BY AFRO-CUBAN DANCE LEGEND
Elena Garcia, world-renowned Afro-Cuban choreographer, dancer and instructor is offering a four-day Master Class to New World School of the Arts high school students. The goal of these exhilarating dance sessions is to expose the young dancers world dance technique as preparation for the World Dance Celebration show that launches the NWSA Dance Season in November. Founder and Artistic Director of Miami's leading Afro-Cuban dance companies and specialist in Afro-Cuban dance, Garcia includes full historical information about the various Orishas retained in the religion of Santeria brought there by the Yoruba people of Nigeria, during her master class presentations.

THE THREEPENNY OPERA OPENS THE SEASON
Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's 1928 uncanny musical Threepenny Opera, launches New World School of the Arts' 2009-2010 Theater season, with a 32 member cast comprised of NWSA college sophomores, juniors and seniors. Directed by NWSA theater faculty Stuart Meltzer, this powerful musical highlights the talent of Renata Eastlick - Music Theater senior, in the role of Jenny Driver, Ann Marie Olson - Music Theater senior, who will play Mrs. Peachum  and Tom Anello - Music Theater senior, as MacHeath, head of the gang of crooks.

Wendy PedersenNWSA JAZZ ENSEMBLE KICKS-OFF THE PGA GOLF TOUR MICCOSUKEE
Powerhouse jazz vocalist Wendy Pedersen joins the NWSA High School Jazz Ensemble in concert to launch this year's PGA Golf Tour Miccosukee. The 20-piece big band will perform classic to contemporary big band sounds accompanied by the soulful and swinging jazz vocal styles of Wendy Pedersen. "Wendy possesses a mastery of soulfulness - she's a living and singing encyclopedia of jazz vocalists. Her interpretations of the American songbook are saturated with the history of jazz as well as the stamp of her own creativity,"  assures Jim Gasior, Dean of Music, and Jazz and Instrumental Studies Associate Professor at NWSA. Gasior will be directing the Jazz Ensemble performance under the stars - "the perfect setting," he comments, "to relax and enjoy the exhilarating sounds of jazz."

Nilo CruzNILO CRUZ KICKS-OFF MAW SERIES
New World School of the Arts will kick-off the second year of its lecture series, Make Art Work (MAW), with award-winning playwright and director Nilo Cruz.  A Cuban-American, Mr. Cruz received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Anna in the Tropics. Cruz is the first Hispanic to receive this honor. During his talk, Exploring the Imagination and Possibilities in the Theatre, Cruz will share his process of dramatization and character development through the art of playwriting. Students will have an opportunity for dialogue with Cruz in a question and answer session following the lecture.

TODO PARA TI. MARIA SOFIA WINS NATIONAL ACCLAIM AS THE WINNER OF 2009 LATINO ART BEAT COMPETITION

City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz will recognize NWSA alum Katherine Ordonez as the national winner of 2009 Latino Art Beat National "Hispanic Heritage" art competition. Ordo�ez's artwork entry titled Todo para ti. Maria Sofia was selected from over 1,000 art entries from high school artists nationally.  As the 2009 national winner, Katherine received a $1,000 cash scholarship award from fashion retailer, Nordstrom, one of Latino Art Beat's 2009 national partners. Nordstrom presented window displays at 19 of their stores nationally featuring Katherine's artwork along with the  artwork of all the regional Latino Art Beat 1st Place winners' in celebration of 2009 Hispanic Heritage Month. Katherine also received a $20,000 scholarship award allocated over four years to for the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, MD through the Latino Art Beat / MICA scholarship program. Katherine graduated this spring from NWSA's visual arts high school program.
