AIGA CROSS CULTURAL DESIGN: TULSA
NWSA visual arts College student Gustavo Cervantes embarked in an exciting adventure this summer travelling to Oklahoma with a team of fellow artists. Reinvigorated by the experience, he talks to us about his journey:
"I was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the AIGA Cross Cultural Design program to visit the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Coming from Miami, I had never experienced the midwest - it's culture, aesthetics or way of life. This opportunity allowed me to see it all for myself.
The trip as a whole was very expeditionary in the sense that I went to collect ideas and inspirations to fuel my work. Being a filmmaker, the landscape and environment were inspiring; the desert plains of the Western part of the state, the green and mountainous Southeast, as well as the colors and architecture of downtown Tulsa. I did a lot of research while there about the state's rich history during the 'Wild West' era which painted a background of the region's unique American culture. A great benefit was being able to go out and physically do the research in the area without limiting myself to just reading about it.
I was able to bring back a many ideas and great experiences to work from. I also made some valuable contacts that will broaden my network of creative professionals and with whom I'll be able to work with in the future. It's a great experience that I would recommend to any visual arts student looking to find inspiration through travel and exploration."

The public arts project, administered through the Gibson Foundation, will feature 10-foot fiberglass guitar sculptures that will be placed across the city. It will also showcase a series of Epiphone artistic guitars designed and painted by local and nationally acclaimed visual artists including New World School of the Arts students. The goal of this exciting and colorful venture, to raise proceeds for three local charities, will be achieved through an auction at the conclusion of the project.

YOUNG BLOOD: NEW WORLD MIXX
Benefiting NWSA High School, Young Blood: New World MIXX exhibition will be presented at NWSA's ARTSEEN gallery as a fundraiser. The show is part of Young Blood, a future series of art exhibitions that will take place in Miami, highlighting emerging artists who actively contribute to the art scene. This year's exhibit blends the work of NWSA alumni of all ages and establishments. The show blurs the boundary between emerging and experienced artists and questions the notion of establishment in the art world by juxtaposing them against each other's backdrop.
Opening Reception: Sat., August 8; 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Wynwood Gallery Walk
