A Center of Excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts, at Miami Dade College - June 2009 |
A year that has brought unprecedented economic challenges to our institution has also proven exceptionally fertile in other areas of growth. As we saw off our graduating class of 2009 we also bid goodbye to an extraordinary administrator. Dr. Mercedes Quiroga has been tapped as president of MDC's Wolfson Campus and we at NWSA could not be more proud. We wish her much success! She left us in the good hands of Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, former dean of Music at NWSA, who is already rolling up his sleeves to continue in the fine tradition of our great institution.

NICOLE BLANCHARD WINS SILVER KNIGHT HONORABLE MENTION
Budding young artist Nicole Blanchard received an honorable mention this year for the Silver Knight Awards' art category.
Nicole was nominated for VPAT (Visual and Performing Arts Tutors), an initiative that provides mentoring to local elementary fifth grade students interested in the visual and performing arts, but who do not attend a magnet elementary school. Using her own life experience as inspiration for this endeavor, Blanchard aims to help students who do not have the financial means to properly prepare for the audition process. "I hope that I have planted the seed in those students my club reached to take advantage of every opportunity given to them," said Blanchard, "I believe that everyone deserves an equal chance."

NWSA JAZZ QUINTET INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE
The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Los Angeles, California has selected 30 of the best high school jazz students from around the country to participate in a national jazz education event at the White House on June 15. Included are the members of the NWSA Jazz Quintet who recently returned from a weeklong Peer-to-Peer Jazz Informance Tour in Pittsburgh with jazz great Antonio Hart, where they taught their peers about America's indigenous art form, and discussed the important values that jazz represents with their like-age audiences. Following the White House event, the students will attend a concert at the Kennedy Center featuring the Marsalis family.
